Lobo is a Czarnian bounty hunter from DC Comics: powerful, violent, devoted to his own interests and prone to treating mayhem like a joke. Jason Momoa plays him in Supergirl, marking the character’s DCU debut. The film is a new screen portrayal, while Lobo’s comic-book history stretches back to 1983.
Who is Lobo in DC Comics?
DC describes Lobo as a native of Czarnia who destroyed his own civilization, leaving himself the last of his people. He makes his living as an intergalactic bounty hunter, pursuing jobs for money rather than a conventional heroic cause. His personality is deliberately excessive: self-interest and brutal violence sit alongside a darkly comic sense of spectacle.

There is a wrinkle in his mercenary code. DC’s character profile says Lobo keeps his word, though he may interpret a promise creatively. That combination—reliability when it suits the terms, and self-interest in choosing those terms—helps explain why “antihero” is only a broad label. He is not simply a conventional hero with rough edges.
What are Lobo’s powers and abilities?
DC’s profile lists super-strength, invulnerability, super-speed and a healing factor among Lobo’s physical advantages. It also credits him with alien technology, combat skill and expertise with weapons. He often travels on a rocket-fueled motorcycle, fitting a character whose approach is as showy as it is destructive.

- Physical resilience: super-strength, invulnerability, speed and accelerated healing.
- Practical skills: combat experience and weapons expertise.
- Equipment: alien technology and his signature rocket-fueled motorcycle.
These details describe the comics character as presented by DC; they should not be assumed to define every detail of Momoa’s film version.
When did Lobo first appear in comics?
DC lists OMEGA MEN #3 (1983) as Lobo’s first appearance. Since then, the character has accumulated a long comic-book history, so a first appearance is a publication milestone rather than necessarily the best entry point for every new reader.

Where should you start reading Lobo?
DC’s March 2026 interview about Lobo’s return discusses possible entry points, including older stories. It also introduces a new solo series written by Skottie Young and illustrated by Jorge Corona. A practical route is to choose one of the older stories discussed in that interview for a taste of the character, then try the new series for a current-era take.
Before buying, check the edition, format, publication status and availability: those details can differ between a single issue and a collection, and no particular retailer listing is established here. DC’s interview with Skottie Young is the source for the series and its reading discussion.

How does Jason Momoa fit into the DCU?
DC announced in July 2025 that Lobo would make his DCU debut in Supergirl, played by Jason Momoa. In a June 24, 2026 feature, DC describes him as a wild card in Kara’s search for a cure for Krypto. That places him in the film’s story; it does not establish that the adaptation will reproduce every comic-book detail.
Momoa has said he has read and collected Lobo comics since childhood and called the role his dream role. Discussing the character, he said, “I’m going to go with the morally gray [bounty hunter].” He also described the physicality and attitude he wanted to bring to the part: “You’ve got to have the swagger… It’s got to ooze through me and that suit.” These comments show how Momoa approaches the portrayal, not a full account of the film’s characterization.
Is a solo Lobo movie confirmed?
No solo film announcement is established by the cited DC coverage. Momoa said, “Hopefully I get to do a solo movie,” which is his personal hope, not confirmation that a project is planned. DC’s June 2026 feature discusses his comments about playing Lobo in Supergirl; it does not announce another screen appearance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the difference between comic Lobo and Momoa’s Lobo?
The comics provide Lobo’s origin, familiar traits and decades of accumulated stories. Momoa’s Lobo is a specific DCU adaptation, introduced in Supergirl as a wild card in Kara’s quest. His comments point to a morally gray bounty hunter and emphasize physical swagger, but they do not establish that every comic power, backstory detail or plot from the comics will carry over unchanged.

For readers, that makes the two entry points complementary: DC’s character profile gives the broad comic-book basics, while the film places Momoa’s version in a particular story. DC’s July 2025 DCU casting announcement and June 2026 feature on Momoa’s portrayal document the screen version.
