“So two summers ago, my best friend from high school’s mother said, ‘I’d really like you to meet John Hughes.’ He is their family friend’s son. I had just about given up on the idea of finding someone, but we had dinner in Philadelphia, and the rest is sort of history.”
The phrase “two summers ago” places the introduction around 2014, which matches a 2026 TV Insider/Swooon profile that dates their meeting to that year. The first meeting was a dinner in Philadelphia, arranged through a mutual family connection rather than through work.

What John Hughes does for a living
This is the question readers ask most often, and the honest answer is that the only firm information is historical and dated.
- July 2016: The Inquirer described Hughes as a marketing director at Merck, based in Philadelphia.
- 2017: At the time of their wedding, Hughes was reported to be a Merck marketing director.
- August 2026: The TV Insider/Swooon profile says it is unclear whether he still works in marketing. It did not confirm a current employer or title.
Treat the Merck role as a description of his career around 2016 and 2017. It should not be read as his present job, and no reviewed source confirms one.
