Spencer Dutton is John Dutton III’s grandfather. Spencer and Alexandra’s son, John Dutton II, is John III’s father, placing Spencer two generations before the modern patriarch of Yellowstone.
John Dutton III’s direct family line
The shortest way to follow the lineage is:
James and Margaret Dutton → Spencer Dutton → John Dutton II → John Dutton III
- James and Margaret are the earlier Dutton generation introduced in 1883. Their son Spencer carries the line forward. Paramount+’s official Dutton timeline places the family across the eras of 1883, 1923 and Yellowstone.
- Spencer and Alexandra are reported as the parents of John Dutton II, whose birth is shown in the 1923 season-two finale. The timeline confirms the birth; TV Insider’s post-finale family-tree report identifies his parents.
- John Dutton II is the father of John Dutton III, the modern-era Dutton patriarch.
That makes Spencer—not his brother John Dutton Sr.—John III’s grandfather in the revealed direct line.
Why Spencer and Jack were both considered
1923 includes several Dutton men named John, and its earlier generations contain more than one plausible route to a later John. Spencer’s older brother is John Dutton Sr.; Jack Dutton is John Sr.’s son. Paramount’s official character descriptions for 1923 identify these relationships and describe John Sr. as Jacob Dutton’s nephew and right-hand man.

Before the finale clarified John II’s parents, viewers and coverage considered whether Spencer or Jack might father the next John. TV Insider’s earlier theory article records that pre-finale uncertainty. It predates the reveal, so it is useful as context for the confusion, not as the current answer.

Post-finale coverage reports that Elizabeth was pregnant and left the ranch, but does not settle the child’s fate. What to Watch’s family-tree coverage describes this as an open branch. The available reporting does not establish whether the child survived or whether that branch later connects to John III.
Spencer’s later son
TV Insider reports that the finale narration said Spencer lived for decades after Alexandra and later had another son with an unnamed widow. The report does not identify the widow or son, and it does not establish a connection between that son and John III’s direct line.
These unresolved branches do not change the answer supported by the reported family tree: the line to John III runs through Spencer and Alexandra’s son, John Dutton II.
