John McEnroe’s wife is Patty Smyth, the singer-songwriter who rose to fame as the lead singer of Scandal. CBS reports that they met in 1993 and married in 1997. Smyth has built a music career of her own, while she and McEnroe have a blended family of six children.

Who is Patty Smyth?

Patty Smyth is an American singer-songwriter best known as Scandal’s lead singer and for her solo work. Her official biography traces her arrival with the band in 1982 and describes a career spanning rock songs, solo releases and music for film.

Scandal’s self-titled debut became the best-selling EP in Columbia Records history, according to Smyth’s official biography; it does not give a sales figure. Smyth later recorded solo material, including the 1992 duet “Sometimes Love Just Ain’t Enough” with Don Henley. Billboard reported in 1998 that the song reached No. 2.

Her song “Look What Love Has Done,” written for the film Junior, received Academy Award and Grammy nominations, and Smyth performed it at the Academy Awards, Billboard reported. She later returned to original music with It’s About Time; her official biography notes that a 2015 holiday album came out during the gap between original releases.

When did John McEnroe and Patty Smyth marry?

CBS reports that McEnroe and Smyth met in 1993 and married in 1997. The sources establish the year, not a reliable exact wedding date.

In a 2020 interview with AARP, Smyth recalled that she and McEnroe grew up about 20 minutes apart in Queens without meeting. She said she was 37 and he was 35 when they met. Smyth described their first date this way: “When John and I went out on a date, it was like I knew him.”

How many children do they have?

Smyth and McEnroe have two daughters together, and their blended family includes six children in all. Smyth’s official biography identifies Ruby as her daughter from an earlier relationship with Richard Hell; McEnroe has three children from his earlier marriage.

How did their careers intersect?

Music was part of their life together early on. CBS recounts that soon after their 1997 marriage, McEnroe wanted to join Smyth’s band. Smyth joked that he wanted to be its lead singer: “And he’d also want to be the lead singer in my band, okay?”

Smyth has also discussed the personal inspiration behind her music. In a 2020 interview, she described “Build A Fire” as a song about her relationship with McEnroe. Her official biography says she has continued touring and playing shows with the same band for 12 years; the biography’s page is undated, so that figure should not be read as a current running total.
