Spoilers for Squid Game Seasons 2 and 3. The Front Man, Hwang In-ho, enters Season 2’s games as Player 001, posing as the player Young-il, because he wants to confront Gi-hun from inside the competition and destroy his belief that people can change. His goal is not simply to kill Gi-hun: he wants Gi-hun to abandon hope and become as cynical as he is.
Why does the Front Man join the games when Gi-hun returns?
Three years after winning the games, Gi-hun gives up his plan to go to the United States and returns with the aim of finding out who runs the competition and stopping it. The Front Man responds by entering the games himself. As Netflix’s Season 2 ending explainer describes it, he takes the Player 001 slot and assumes the name Young-il so he can engage Gi-hun from inside the contest while concealing his identity.
The choice puts him close to the person whose convictions he wants to challenge. Rather than confront Gi-hun openly as the masked organizer, he can appear to be another contestant—and, eventually, someone Gi-hun trusts.
What does he want Gi-hun to believe?
Their conflict is ideological. Gi-hun still believes people can act together to change a corrupt system; the Front Man believes hope in humanity is misplaced. In a Netflix Tudum interview, actor Lee Byung-hun describes the questions the Front Man poses: “Do you really think you’re going to be able to end the game? Do you really think there’s hope in people? Do you think the world’s going to change?”

Lee states the objective more directly: “For the Front Man, he’s not really interested in whether or not Gi-hun dies or lives. Front Man wants to dismantle the noble belief that Gi-hun holds on to. Front Man believes that Gi-hun will inevitably change to think just like him. That’s why it’s important to him that Gi-hun is put back into the games again.”
In other words, Gi-hun’s survival is less important to the Front Man than what Gi-hun comes to believe. He wants to make him concede that resistance is futile and that people will ultimately fail one another.

How does the Player 001 disguise help him?
As Young-il, the Front Man can observe Gi-hun’s effort from within the competition, take part in conversations about whether the players should continue, and influence events while appearing to share their risks. The persona gives him a way to test Gi-hun’s faith in cooperation through an apparent ally, not just through threats from outside the game.
Netflix’s Season 2 explainer frames the disguise as part of the Front Man’s ideological contest with Gi-hun. Netflix’s later Season 3 ending explainer also looks back on Gi-hun’s trust in Young-il and the collapse of that trust when his identity is exposed. The apparent friendship serves the Front Man’s plan; it is not an equal partnership.

How does the rebellion serve his plan?
The finale turns the Front Man’s argument into a personal catastrophe for Gi-hun. He breaks away from the rebels, kills two of them, fakes Young-il’s death, and uses the guards’ radio channel to help crush the uprising. After Gi-hun and Jung-bae surrender, he changes back into his Front Man uniform and shoots Jung-bae.
Netflix’s ending explainer describes the intended lesson: the Front Man wants Gi-hun to see his “little hero games” as empty. He would rather make Gi-hun experience the failure of his rebellion than simply kill him. Jung-bae’s death makes that lesson intimate: Gi-hun’s attempt to save people has ended in the loss of someone he cares about.

Was Young-il’s betrayal a last-minute decision?
No. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Netflix Tudum that the betrayal was not a sudden change of heart: “Because that was his intention and plan all along.” Young-il’s apparent cooperation and his later attack are parts of the same strategy: earn Gi-hun’s trust, undermine his effort, and try to leave him convinced that hope is naïve.
The series shows the deception’s emotional impact on Gi-hun, but the creator’s explanation makes the Front Man’s underlying plan clear. The betrayal is designed to hurt because Gi-hun believed he had found an ally.
