The Gilead story continues in The Testaments, a separate follow-up series—not season 7.
Is The Handmaid’s Tale season 7 happening?
No. Hulu’s official season page calls season 6 the final season. Its synopsis describes June’s return to the fight against Gilead as the final chapter of her story. The designation applies to the original series, not every television story set in Gilead.

Hulu’s episode schedule ends with season 6, episode 10, also titled “The Handmaid’s Tale,” which premiered on May 27, 2025. The official materials establish that the show was presented as ending with season 6; they do not give a specific business or creative reason for ending it. It would be speculation to attribute the decision to ratings, budgets, cast choices or disagreements.
Was the show cancelled?
The clearest answer is that Hulu designated season 6 as the final season. The official sources cited here do not describe the ending as a cancellation or explain it through a particular behind-the-scenes cause. The important distinction is that the original series has concluded, while a related series carries the story forward.

Is The Testaments season 7?
No. The Testaments is a separate follow-up series based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name. Hulu describes it as an evolution of The Handmaid’s Tale, following young characters Agnes and Daisy at Aunt Lydia’s preparatory school. Its own season count is separate from the original show’s six seasons.
On May 20, 2026, Disney announced that The Testaments had been renewed for a second season. The announcement said season 1 was streaming on Disney+ in the UK and set its finale for May 27, 2026; those details establish UK availability, not availability in every country. Check the current catalog in your location to find where it streams.

Where can I watch The Testaments?
The confirmed availability in Disney’s May 20, 2026 announcement is season 1 on Disney+ in the UK. Streaming catalogs vary by country and can change, so that announcement does not establish where the series is currently available elsewhere. Check your local Hulu or Disney+ catalog, or the services available in your region.
What to read after the series
Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale is the source novel for the original series, and The Testaments is its directly related follow-up novel. Hulu identifies the novels as the source material for the respective shows. Neither book is a seventh television season.

What Disney has said about The Testaments
In its May 20, 2026 renewal announcement, Disney reported that The Testaments had accumulated more than 45 million hours streamed globally on Hulu and Disney+ “to date.” It also reported a 76% increase in one-day views for episode 8 compared with the premiere. These are Disney’s figures as of that announcement, not ongoing totals.
