Rotta is muscular because the filmmakers deliberately designed Jabba the Hutt’s grown son to look young, strong, and athletic—not like a smaller copy of the older, heavier Hutts. ILM then built a layered digital body whose muscles tense beneath its fat and skin as he moves. That is a character-design choice, not evidence of a general rule about Hutt biology.
Why does Rotta look different from Jabba and the Hutt twins?
Rotta first appeared as Jabba’s infant son in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, where Ahsoka Tano carried him in a backpack and called him “Stinky.” In The Mandalorian and Grogu, he returns grown up and adapted for live action. StarWars.com describes the intended look as “young, strong, and athletic,” contrasting Rotta with the older, heavier Hutt twins, whose designs show little visible muscle definition. StarWars.com’s production feature explains that the contrast helps convey Rotta’s youth and physical strength.
That comparison concerns these characters’ designs. It does not establish that Hutts as a species are usually muscular, or that Rotta’s physique reflects a biological norm. The official account describes a deliberate visual identity for one character.
How did ILM create the muscles?
Industrial Light & Magic built Rotta as a layered digital character, with a skeleton, muscle system, fat layers, and skin. The layers were simulated after the animation so that the muscles could fire, tense, and relax while the softer mass moved over them. As animation supervisor Hal Hickel put it, the result includes “a jiggling fat layer on top.” Muscle definition therefore adds to Rotta’s heavy, fleshy appearance rather than replacing it.

This combination makes the physique readable in motion: the underlying muscles suggest strength, while the outer layers preserve the weight and softness associated with a Hutt. The film’s production feature also reports that stunt-team member Richard Cetrone stood in for Rotta on set, giving the human cast and camera crew a physical eyeline and reference. The finished Rotta is digital.
How did the artists make Rotta move?
Because the team had rarely seen Hutts move quickly, the artists looked beyond the familiar Hutt image for a useful movement reference. Hickel said they studied elephant seals, whose front-fin movement and undulating rear body helped inform Rotta’s run. That reference gave the animators a way to make him move with force and speed while retaining a broad, heavy body.

His muscular look and his movement were developed together: the layered simulation lets his body respond to action, while the movement design gives that strength a distinctive physical expression. The production account does not provide a measured weight or a quantified strength level for Rotta; descriptions of how massive he feels are impressions of the animation, not character statistics.
How did Rotta’s design change during production?
Production designer Doug Chiang’s concept-art group explored possible grown-up versions of Rotta. Lead modeler Masa Narita began with the brother Hutt’s model, retaining some facial-shape libraries and family design language, then developed Rotta into a younger, stronger character with a distinct silhouette and personality.

The look evolved as the team refined his face. Jon Favreau at one point asked for a gentler, more approachable expression. Later, Dave Filoni felt the design had become too friendly and human and needed to look more Hutt-like. The final redesign focused largely on Rotta’s face. That back-and-forth helps explain how the finished character can appear approachable in some respects while still feeling recognizably Hutt.
