Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteMarvel cast Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom—not Tony Stark—because Kevin Feige wanted a return that would not simply repeat Downey’s Iron Man story, and director Joe Russo publicly described Downey as the actor for the role. The casting was announced in July 2024, about five years after Avengers: Endgame was released in 2019. That interval is between the release and announcement; it is not a confirmed five-year jump in the story.
Marvel’s stated creative rationale
Feige proposed a return that moved forward
Downey told the Los Angeles Times that Feige raised the possibility of his return in a conversation the year before the 2024 announcement. Downey recalled Feige asking, “How can we not go backwards? How can we not disappoint expectations? How can we continue to beat expectations?” Downey said Feige then brought up Victor von Doom and later told him, “Let’s get Victor Von Doom right.”
That account points to the central creative distinction: Downey could return to Marvel in a new role rather than resume the Tony Stark story that ended in Endgame. It is Downey recounting Feige’s pitch, not a complete account of every factor behind the casting.
Russo praised Downey as the actor for Doom
At Marvel’s July 27, 2024, San Diego Comic-Con presentation, director Joe Russo framed the choice in emphatic terms. As D23 reported the next day, Russo said, “If we’re gonna bring Victor Von Doom to movie theaters worldwide, then I think we’re going to need the greatest actor in the world to play that character.” He then introduced Downey as “the one person who could play Victor Von Doom,” invoking the possibilities of the Marvel multiverse.

Those were public promotional remarks explaining the choice at the announcement, not a transcript of Marvel’s private deliberations. They show how Russo presented Downey’s suitability; they do not establish that this was the only reason Marvel hired him.
Who Downey is playing—and what remains unknown
Marvel and Disney identify Downey’s new role as Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom. Disney’s official Avengers: Doomsday page lists him as Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom, and the company’s March 2025 cast announcement says he previously played Tony Stark/Iron Man in ten films and confirms the new role.

That distinction matters because Stark and Doom are separate characters. The Los Angeles Times describes Doom as a formidable Marvel villain and a primary adversary of the Fantastic Four. Downey’s casting creates an obvious question about how the film will handle the familiar face, but the public comments and announcements cited here do not explain the movie’s continuity mechanics or establish that Doom is a Stark variant.
In April 2026, the Associated Press reported that Downey was returning as the film’s main antagonist, Victor von Doom/Doctor Doom. The AP also reported Feige describing Doomsday as picking up where Endgame left off. That describes the film’s relation to the earlier saga; it does not mean Doom is Stark or that Tony’s death has been undone. The film’s full explanation, if any, of the connection between Doom and Stark remains undisclosed.

What “five years after Endgame” means
Avengers: Endgame was released in 2019, and Marvel announced Downey’s Doom casting in July 2024. The title’s five-year interval refers to those real-world dates. The available announcements and reporting do not establish a five-year in-story time jump between Stark’s death and Doom’s arrival.
