A search can also surface a different track called “Bastard”: Spotify lists a 34-second live recording on Live At Splash!. It is not the original mixtape. Spotify’s live-track listing
Could sample clearance be the reason?
It is a credible possibility, but not an established explanation for Bastard. Spotify for Artists explains that clearing a sample may require permission for both the underlying composition and the specific recording. Those rights may be held by different parties, and clearance involves negotiation. That can make distributing a sample-heavy recording more complicated than simply uploading it. - Open Tyler, The Creator’s artist page in Spotify and look under his releases for the original Bastard mixtape.
- Check any search result against its release and track details. A short live track titled “Bastard” on Live At Splash! is not the 2009 mixtape.
- If the mixtape is not listed, treat that as the catalog result for your account and region at that time, rather than evidence of a permanent worldwide decision.
