Evan Ross’s father was Arne Næss Jr., a Norwegian shipbroker, shipowner, investor and mountaineer. He was married to singer and actor Diana Ross, and Evan is one of their two sons. Næss died in 2004, and his life is mostly documented through Norwegian reference works, newspaper archives and obituary coverage.
Who Arne Næss Jr. was
Arne Næss Jr. (8 December 1937 to 13 January 2004) is listed in the Norwegian encyclopedia Store norske leksikon as a shipbroker, shipowner, investor and mountaineer. The entry’s own wording is “Arne Næss var en norsk skipsmegler, reder, investor og fjellklatrer”, which translates as “Arne Næss was a Norwegian shipbroker, shipowner, investor, and mountaineer.” His shipping work was run from New York and later London, and climbing was a serious part of his public life alongside business.
Name variants
The encyclopedia gives his birth name as Arne Rudolf Ludvig Raab. English-language reporting often writes “Arne Naess” without the ø, and the Norwegian spelling is Næss. “Arne Næss Jr.” or “Arne Næss junior” is the clearest way to refer to him.
Evan Ross’s family
Næss married Diana Ross in 1986. The encyclopedia says the couple had two children. Reporting from the period identifies the sons as Ross Arne Næss and Evan Ross, and independent obituary coverage of Næss’s death names Evan among his sons.

Mountaineering and the 1985 Everest expedition
Næss is best known outside business for mountaineering. NRK’s archive reports that he led five Norwegians to the summit of Mount Everest in 1985. The encyclopedia dates the expedition’s summit to 29 April 1985. Both sources describe the same expedition; they are reference accounts rather than a full expedition diary.
His death
Næss died in a climbing accident near Cape Town, South Africa, on 13 January 2004. Reference and obituary sources agree on the date and location.

Arne Næss Jr. and the philosopher Arne Næss
The philosopher Arne Næss, a well-known Norwegian thinker associated with deep ecology, was Arne Næss Jr.’s uncle. The encyclopedia makes this relationship explicit, so readers searching the name should check which Arne Næss is meant. The businessman and mountaineer is Evan Ross’s father.
What a 2005 interview says about him
A 2005 Nettavisen report quotes Ross Arne Næss, one of Arne Næss Jr.’s sons, saying in Norwegian: “Jeg hadde verdens kuleste far.” The article translates this as “I had the coolest dad in the world.” The words belong to Ross Arne Næss, not to Evan Ross, and they are the only first-person family remark on record in the sources reviewed.
