The Doors of Stone, the planned third Kingkiller Chronicle novel, has no confirmed publication date. The latest dated status report reviewed, published September 28, 2026, did not report the book as finished. Patrick Rothfuss has discussed personal and communication challenges around updates, but the public information does not establish one definitive cause for the delay or a release timetable.

What is the current status of The Doors of Stone?

As of the September 28, 2026 report from Winter Is Coming, no publication date had been announced, and Rothfuss had not said the novel was complete. That report described no substantive update since The Narrow Road Between Desires appeared in late 2023. It also mentioned a brief remark from a June 2025 event, but attributed it to fan reporting rather than a verified transcript; it does not establish the manuscript’s current condition.

The first two Kingkiller Chronicle novels are The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear, identified as Books 1 and 2 in Rothfuss’s official bibliography. Recent coverage describes The Doors of Stone as the intended third and final installment, but no current schedule is available.

Why is the book taking so long?

There is no documented, complete explanation that can be reduced to a single cause. In a May 2023 blog post, Rothfuss described personal upheaval and the difficulty of communicating updates to a very large readership. He also noted that publication involves a team, including his publisher DAW and editor Betsy Wollheim.

Those comments offer context, not a definitive account of every factor behind the delay. The available statements do not establish perfectionism, a publisher dispute, adaptation work, or any particular personal event as the sole explanation. Nor do they provide a completion percentage, current word count, or scheduled publication year.

How to judge release-date claims

Rothfuss warned in 2023 that retailer systems can automatically fill in a publication date that is “not-real.” A retailer listing, without a matching author or publisher announcement, should not be treated as confirmation.

  • Official author or publisher announcement: the clearest evidence of a confirmed date. Rothfuss’s official FAQ says, “when there is news about book 3, I will pass it along.” The page is undated, so that sentence is a statement of policy, not a newly posted status update.
  • Dated reporting: useful for establishing what was publicly known at that point. The September 2026 report is the latest dated status account in the material available here, not a guarantee that no later announcement has occurred.
  • Retailer placeholders or fan accounts: not confirmation. Treat event remarks reported second-hand as unverified unless a reliable transcript or direct statement is available.

Rothfuss wrote in a January 26, 2017 post about the Book 3 Q&A, “There is no release date yet.” That is a historical statement, not evidence of the book’s present status. The current answer should be grounded in later statements and reporting, not that old quote or an automatically generated listing.

What can you read while waiting?

The official bibliography lists other books connected to the series, but neither is Book 3. The Slow Regard of Silent Things is related reading; The Narrow Road Between Desires is a revised, expanded version of “The Lightning Tree” centered on Bast. Readers starting the series can begin with The Name of the Wind, followed by The Wise Man’s Fear.

These books offer more of the setting and characters, but they are not substitutes for the unreleased third novel. No release format or date for The Doors of Stone is established by the sources cited here.
