Dale is desperate to leave and argues that somebody has to try the Faraway Tree. Despite Tabitha and Jade trying to reason with him, he goes in. When the residents find him, he is embedded in the concrete wall of the abandoned swimming pool. He dies there.

His hope is plain: “I wanna go home!” But wanting to go home does not mean he can choose where the tree takes him—or that it will take him home at all.
Why does Boyd warn them about the tree?
Boyd pushes back against the idea that the tree is a controllable route out. “You’re all assuming that this tree is some kind of magic door. It’s not,” he says. He describes going through one himself and ending up in “a chimney underground,” where he “Damn near killed” himself.

That earlier experience makes Boyd’s objection more than a general fear of the unknown: the story has already shown that a tree can lead somewhere dangerous and unwanted. Dale’s death makes the warning more severe, but it does not reveal the rules behind the trees.
Why did Dale arrive in that exact spot?
The episode does not say. It shows Dale entering and then appearing inside the pool wall, but it does not establish whether the destination was random, tied to Dale, chosen by a supernatural force, or produced by some other mechanism. Calling the tree’s action deliberate—or claiming to know a specific rule that put Dale in the wall—goes beyond what this episode confirms.

The safest reading is that Dale takes a lethal risk by treating the tree as a possible way home without knowing or controlling its destination. The scene works as a warning about the danger of assuming that one journey, or one person’s result, makes another journey predictable. That is an interpretation of the scene, not a confirmed account of how the tree operates.

She says the tree took her to a lighthouse, but she cannot explain how she went from there to a hospital in Maine. The show gives viewers different outcomes—Tabitha’s journey and Dale’s fatal arrival—without explaining a dependable pattern between them. Neither outcome establishes that the tree is a usable, controllable exit.
