Arlene Alda is an author and photographer whose career began in classical music. Her official biography says she graduated from Hunter College, received a Fulbright Scholarship, and played clarinet professionally in the Houston Symphony under Leopold Stokowski. She later changed careers while her children were young, becoming a photographer and author. Macmillan’s author biography describes a similar path.
Her work spans books for adults and children. Her official biography reported nineteen books in 2015; Macmillan also gives that count. These are figures from the author and publisher biographies, not independently audited totals.

Biography.com reports that Alan and Arlene married in 1957 and have three daughters: Eve, Elizabeth, and Beatrice. In a Guardian interview published May 26, 2025, Alan was described as celebrating 68 years of marriage, consistent with the reported wedding year.

Her books include adult works and children’s titles. Among her adult books, her official catalog lists On Set: A Personal Story in Pictures and Words (1981), The Last Days of MASH (1983), 97 Orchard Street (2001), and Just Kids From the Bronx: Telling It the Way It Was (2015), an oral history published by Henry Holt on March 3, 2015.

In the 2025 Guardian interview, Alan Alda said: “I don’t think it can be put into a nugget. It involves being aware of how much you love the person not only in tender moments but also when you’re screaming at each other.” He also relayed Arlene’s concise response to the question of a long marriage: “a short memory.” These are the couple’s reported remarks, not a formula that applies to every relationship.
The same interview said Arlene had returned to piano after decades away from it because she no longer had the breath for clarinet. That is a detail reported in the 2025 conversation, not a current health update.
