Spoilers for The Last of Us Season 1 finale. The Fireflies are a resistance faction fighting military rule in the quarantine zones, led by Marlene. They are not one villain or a literal “final boss”: the phrase describes their role in the season’s last major conflict, where their mission to save humanity collides with Joel’s determination to protect Ellie.
Who are the Fireflies?
The Fireflies are a makeshift resistance organization opposing the military authorities who govern the quarantine zones. Their cause is political, but their defining hope is broader: they believe humanity can be saved. The group’s name and visual identity mark its members as opponents of the established military order.

PlayStation’s character guide identifies Marlene as the Fireflies’ leader, calling her the “Queen of the Fireflies.” Its faction guide describes the group’s improvised appearance: members may wear dark armbands with a white Firefly logo, numbered pendants, and repurposed military clothing, armor, and weapons in muted greens and tans.
Who leads the Fireflies?
Marlene leads the group. Her medical background is central to her outlook: PlayStation’s character guide connects her belief in the value of saving humanity to the events that bring Joel and Ellie into conflict with her. The HBO adaptation casts Merle Dandridge as Marlene, according to the Warner Bros. Discovery pressroom announcement for the first season.

Why are the Fireflies the “final boss”?
“Final boss” is a metaphor for the Fireflies’ place in the finale, not an official label or the name of a single character. They are a faction; Marlene is their leader. In the season’s final conflict, their goal of saving humanity clashes with Joel’s choice to protect Ellie. That is why the Fireflies function as the last major opposing force in the story, even though the conflict is more complicated than a conventional hero-versus-villain battle.
The Fireflies see Ellie in relation to their cause; Joel’s actions make Ellie’s life and agency the immediate issue. The finale’s moral tension comes from those competing priorities, not from the group being portrayed as a simple, universally evil enemy.

Why did Joel save Ellie?
Joel acts to protect Ellie rather than accept the Fireflies’ plan. By then, their relationship has become the defining bond of his journey, and he chooses her over the possibility the Fireflies represent. The choice puts personal loyalty and Ellie’s life at the center of the ending, in opposition to the Fireflies’ larger mission.
Could the Fireflies make a cure?
The Fireflies believe their cause could help save humanity, but that is an in-story hope, not proof of what would be medically possible in real life. The official character and faction references describe the group’s mission and Marlene’s beliefs; they do not establish the real-world likelihood of developing a cure. The finale’s dilemma is therefore best understood through what the characters believe and choose, rather than as a scientific claim about medicine.

How does the HBO story relate to the game?
The HBO series is based on the original game story. PlayStation describes The Last of Us Part I as a faithful remake of the original narrative and says Naughty Dog collaborated with HBO on a series based on that story. That connection provides context, but it does not make every game detail interchangeable with the show: this explanation concerns the HBO Season 1 adaptation. The pressroom identifies the first season as nine episodes.
What is the Fireflies’ slogan?
“When you’re lost in the darkness, look for the light.” HBO Shop uses that wording for official Firefly merchandise, presenting it as the group’s rallying cry rather than attributing it to a particular speaker. The phrase captures the Fireflies’ promise of hope, even as the finale shows how sharply that promise can conflict with an individual’s interests.
