“No Scrubs” has no confirmed single-person subject. Co-writer Kandi Burruss said a previous relationship inspired some of the lyrics, but TLC described the song as drawing on the group members’ own perceptions and experiences with people they knew. Neither account identifies one person as the target of the entire song.
Did Kandi Burruss write “No Scrubs” about an ex?
Burruss said a previous relationship informed some lyrics, but the account does not name the person or connect every lyric to that relationship. It is therefore fair to say that a former partner was part of the song’s personal starting point—not that the entire song was confirmed to be about one identifiable ex.

Burruss and Tameka “Tiny” Cottle initially developed the song for themselves to perform, with music by Kevin “She’kspere” Briggs. Burruss recalled beginning with the music before lyrics or melody: “No lyrics, no melody, just the music.” Colorado Public Radio’s 20th-anniversary feature recounts that early writing process.
What did TLC say inspired the song?
TLC members T-Boz and Chilli described a wider pool of inspiration: “For this song, we took [inspiration] from both of our perceptions as well as experiences from people we knew.” That account makes the song broader than a private story about Burruss’s past relationship.

Chilli also said she did not know whom Burruss originally wrote it for. In the group’s 20th-anniversary retrospective, she recalled being told that the person “didn’t want to sing it.” Her comment reinforces that TLC did not present a confirmed identity for the original inspiration.
What did TLC mean by a “scrub”?
A related account of the group’s interpretation describes a scrub as lazy, unwilling to work, and failing to care for his children. That framing centers conduct and responsibility, rather than simply a man’s income. It helps explain the song’s point of view, but it does not establish that a particular person inspired every line.

How did the song become a TLC release?
After Burruss and Cottle first intended to perform it themselves, the song became a TLC track. “No Scrubs” was released as a single from the group’s 1999 album FanMail. Colorado Public Radio’s retrospective discusses the song’s creation and anniversary context.
