The Twelve Kizuki are Muzan Kibutsuji’s elite demon subordinates, divided into six Upper Ranks and six Lower Ranks. Their lineup changes over the course of Demon Slayer, so the clearest roster names both the rank and the story-period succession.
How the Twelve Kizuki are organized
“Twelve Kizuki” is the group’s name; “12 Demon Moons” is a reader-friendly English rendering. The organization serves Muzan Kibutsuji and is split into Upper and Lower ranks. Rank numbers indicate standing within each tier, so “Upper Three” and “Lower Three” would mean different positions. The official anime character profiles identify the group as Muzan’s subordinates and assign members such as Akaza, Enmu and Rui their ranks.
Upper Ranks: the roster and its successors
The following lineup includes the succession changes established in the story. Daki and Gyutaro share a rank, so the list names more than six demons across the two lineups.
| Rank | Earlier occupant(s) | Later occupant |
|---|---|---|
| Upper One | Kokushibo | No successor identified here |
| Upper Two | Doma | No successor identified here |
| Upper Three | Akaza | No successor identified here |
| Upper Four | Hantengu | Nakime, after Hantengu’s death |
| Upper Five | Gyokko | No successor identified here |
| Upper Six | Daki and Gyutaro, sharing the position | Kaigaku, after their deaths |
The official 2023 Upper Rank cast announcement names Kokushibo, Doma, Hantengu and Gyokko. Official character material identifies Akaza as Upper Three and Daki and Gyutaro as Upper Six. The official Infinity Castle film character page records Nakime’s succession to Upper Four and Kaigaku’s succession to Upper Six. These are not all members of one timeless lineup: some names belong to successive story periods.

What to know about the Upper Rank names
- Kokushibo: Upper One; the official character material notes his three pairs of eyes.
- Doma: Upper Two.
- Akaza: Upper Three; official material describes his pursuit of the highest level of martial strength.
- Hantengu and Nakime: Hantengu held Upper Four before Nakime succeeded him.
- Gyokko: Upper Five.
- Daki and Gyutaro: siblings who shared Upper Six; Kaigaku held the position after their deaths.
Lower Ranks: identified members and former members
The Lower Ranks also changed. Enmu is Lower One, and the official profile says Muzan spared him during the purge of the Lower Ranks after taking an interest in him. Rui is Lower Five. Some official Lower Rank entries identify a position without supplying a demon’s personal name, so rank labels alone do not establish a complete roster of everyone who held a Lower position.
- Enmu: Lower One and a survivor of Muzan’s purge of the Lower Ranks.
- Rui: Lower Five.
- Kyogai: a former member of the Twelve Kizuki, rather than a member of the later lineup.
The official anime character portal provides the Lower Rank framework and Enmu’s position; Rui’s official profile identifies him as Lower Five. Kyogai is described as a former member in official character material.

Why different rosters may list different demons
“Who are the Twelve Kizuki?” can refer either to a lineup at a particular point in the story or to every named demon who held a rank over time. The Upper Rank roster has explicit successors: Nakime follows Hantengu, and Kaigaku follows the siblings Daki and Gyutaro. For the Lower Ranks, the available official entries identify Enmu, Rui and former member Kyogai, but do not provide personal names for every rank position or a complete historical membership list. An arc-specific roster should therefore be labeled by its period rather than presented as the only lineup.
