Steven Cheung, a White House communications manager, attacked the criticism of Sydney Sweeney’s “great jeans” ad as “moronic” and tied the backlash to the 2024 election. The dispute began with a denim pun that some critics said evoked eugenics and white supremacy, while supporters argued that critics were reading too much into an advertisement.
What was in the American Eagle campaign?
American Eagle featured Sydney Sweeney in a denim campaign built around the line “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” Some campaign material also played on “genes,” turning the familiar clothing word into a reference to inherited traits. That pun—not a documented statement of political intent—became the focus of the argument. Euronews reported on the campaign and its reception.
Why did the ads draw criticism?
Critics objected to the pairing of a discussion of inherited traits with Sweeney’s appearance. They said the wording and presentation evoked eugenics or white supremacy. Those were critics’ interpretations of the campaign; the available reporting does not establish that American Eagle or Sweeney intended to promote either ideology.
Others saw the controversy as an excessive reaction to a clothing advertisement or a misreading of a pun. The disagreement was therefore about more than the literal wordplay: it also concerned what the campaign’s presentation suggested to different audiences.

What did the White House say?
White House communications manager Steven Cheung attacked the liberal criticism, calling it “moronic” and saying it was “a big reason why Americans voted the way they did in 2024.” That was Cheung’s political characterization of the backlash, not a formal finding about the advertisement or evidence that all voters shared his view. The Independent reported Cheung’s response.
How did Sweeney and American Eagle explain the campaign?
Sweeney said people were turning an “innocent celebration” into an “absurd political statement,” adding that this was not the intention. American Eagle said the campaign “is and always was about the jeans.” These statements describe the actor’s and company’s positions; they do not independently establish intent. BBC News reported Sweeney’s response, and NBC News reported the company’s statement.

How widely was the ad seen?
Euronews reported that the most popular ad had more than 80 million views as of July 31, 2025. That is a dated measure of the ad’s reach, not evidence that viewers approved of it or were persuaded by it.
