How Lionel and Brenda Richie became her parents
Nicole moved into the household of Lionel Richie and his then-wife, Brenda Harvey-Richie, when she was three. They officially adopted her when she was nine, according to Biography.com and Good Morning America, which covered Lionel’s interview with People.
The accounts describe Nicole’s biological parents as friends of Lionel’s who were struggling financially. Lionel recalled falling in love with Nicole and said, “by that time I was Dad,” as quoted by Biography.com.
