Feyd-Rautha appears in black and white during the gladiator sequence because it takes place on Giedi Prime, the Harkonnen home world, beneath its black sun. Director Denis Villeneuve and cinematographer Greig Fraser gave the planet a stark visual identity distinct from Arrakis and Caladan; infrared cinematography helped create the scene’s unusual look. Feyd’s chalky pallor and hairless appearance are separate character-design choices, achieved with a sculpted cap and makeup.

Why does Giedi Prime look black and white?

Villeneuve wanted the Harkonnen home world to feel unmistakably different from the other planets in Dune: Part Two. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, he described the goal as making viewers feel they were in “a different space and time.” Giedi Prime’s stark monochrome look establishes that contrast, while its black sun gives the arena setting an in-world visual rationale.

Villeneuve also gave the look a thematic meaning. In a Screen International scene breakdown, he said the eerie black-and-white world suggests “a binary way of looking at the world,” which he associated with fascism. That is the director’s interpretation of this design choice, not a universal meaning of monochrome imagery.

How did infrared photography shape the arena scene?

The gladiator battle was filmed using infrared cinematography, according to costume designer Jacqueline West’s interview with The Credits. Infrared affected how materials appeared on camera: West said some fabrics rendered white during tests, forcing her to replace affected costume pieces. As she put it, “That’s a heads-up for other designers: when you’re shooting in infrared, test everything.”

West designed the Harkonnen costumes with a dark, Gothic rock-star quality, using materials such as black leather, vinyl and heavy wool while allowing the fighters to move. Infrared testing mattered because a material’s appearance to the eye did not guarantee how it would register in the finished image. The production account establishes infrared use for the gladiator scene; it does not establish that every Giedi Prime scene was filmed that way.

Is Feyd-Rautha’s pale appearance what makes the scene monochrome?

No. The scene’s monochrome photography and Feyd’s pallor are related parts of the presentation, but they are not the same choice. Butler’s hairless, chalky appearance is character styling; it does not by itself turn the image black and white.

Villeneuve told Vanity Fair, “I loved the idea that Harkonnens are a society that doesn’t like hair.” Butler wore two caps, including a sculpted piece attached near the eyelids and extending backward, while makeup artists airbrushed exposed skin with chalky paint. This was a deliberate cultural design for the film, not evidence that Harkonnens are biologically hairless.

Butler described the transformation to the Associated Press as valuable to his performance: “It’s a real gift as an actor when you look in the mirror and you don’t see yourself.” Villeneuve summarized Feyd as “a cross between a sword master and Mick Jagger,” according to the AP interview.

How does the film’s Feyd differ from the novel?

The film’s pale, hairless Feyd is a significant visual departure from the character description in Frank Herbert’s novel quoted by Vanity Fair: a dark-haired youth with a round face and sullen eyes. The adaptation’s design makes Feyd fit the film’s deliberately stylized Harkonnen culture and the uncanny world of Giedi Prime.
