Kim Burgess does not appear in the Season 12 premiere of Chicago P.D., “Ten Ninety-Nine,” which Apple TV lists as Season 12, Episode 1, with a U.S. listing date of September 25, 2024. On screen, her absence is explained as a work trip: she is at a conference. Her colleague Sergeant Ruzek mentions it to Atwater early in the episode, and the show’s storyline keeps her away from the Intelligence Unit for the opening stretch of the season.
What the premiere does not explain is why actor Marina Squerciati is missing. The reporting available on the premiere does not give a real-world reason for her absence, and this article does not supply one.

What the premiere says about Burgess
In “Ten Ninety-Nine,” Intelligence is handling an overwhelming caseload and a high-stakes drug bust, and Burgess is not among the officers working it. TV Insider’s September 25, 2024 premiere report describes her as noticeably absent on screen. The episode’s only direct account of her whereabouts comes early, when Ruzek says he has just spoken with her.
According to TV Insider’s quotations of that exchange, Ruzek tells Atwater:

“She said the conference is good, learning a lot.”
“She’s disturbed by our caseload, so she’s thinking about coming back early.”

Those two lines set up the storyline in the episode’s own terms. Burgess is enjoying the conference and getting something out of it, but the unit’s workload is weighing on her, and she is considering returning before the conference ends.
When Burgess returns
TV Insider also reported that showrunner Gwen Sigan said Squerciati would be back in Episode 3. That statement was made at the time of the premiere, in September 2024, so it is a planned return for that point in the season rather than a confirmed record of how the season played out.

Sigan’s comments also described the season’s approach to Burgess’s relationship. As TV Insider quoted her:
“What we want to do is show an authentic long-term relationship. They’re getting married and they are each other’s person. They’re each other’s kind of foundation and rock and sounding board. We’ll have the wedding in sort of the later end of the season, but until then, we will always get to see them coming back together as a family unit and dealing with problems as couples do.”

Read together, the two statements suggest that Burgess’s time away is a short storyline and that her relationship with Atwater remains part of the season’s ongoing plot, though the reporting does not give a more detailed schedule.

The distinction matters. The conference explanation belongs to the character. Reasons for an actor’s absence from filming, such as personal, medical, or production matters, are a separate question, and none of the premiere listing or the reporting on it addresses them. Speculation about her personal circumstances is not supported by the evidence.

Where to watch the premiere
Apple TV’s episode page lists “Ten Ninety-Nine” with a 40-minute runtime and Squerciati in the cast as Officer Kim Burgess, so it is a reliable place to confirm episode number and cast. Peacock’s search-indexed catalog also lists Season 12 and later episodes, but when that page was opened it redirected to a regional availability notice. Streaming rights vary by country and change over time, so check the current availability for your region on each service before you plan to watch.
Checking the season after Episode 3
The Episode 3 return is a 2024 announcement. If you are watching or reading about the season now, confirm Burgess’s appearances against the episode-by-episode listings on Apple TV or the broadcaster’s own episode guide, rather than assuming the planned timing held.
