The Perfect Neighbor is set in Ocala, Florida—but it was not filmed there as a conventional movie production. The documentary is built primarily from police body-camera recordings of real events in the neighborhood, supplemented by 911 audio and interviews.
Where was The Perfect Neighbor filmed?
Netflix Tudum gives the location as Ocala, Florida, while clarifying that the film was “filmed — or rather, in this case, footage edited together” there: Netflix Tudum’s location explainer. Ocala is the place where the events happened and the recordings were made, not a conventional set where actors reenacted them.

Where did the bodycam footage come from?
Attorneys for Ajike “AJ” Owens’s family obtained hours of police body-camera footage and audio recordings through a Freedom of Information Act request as the case against Susan Lorincz developed. The material was intended to shed light on the events leading up to Owens’s killing. Director Geeta Gandbhir and editor Virdiana Lieberman worked through a large, initially disorganized archive, syncing footage and audio to build a chronology and bring community perspectives into the film. Netflix Tudum discusses that process in its interview with the director and editor.
What footage and audio does the documentary use?
Netflix describes the film as using bodycam footage from dozens of police visits. Tudum says it is told almost completely through police body-camera recordings, while also identifying interviews and 911 audio as part of the reconstruction. So “bodycam documentary” is a useful shorthand, but it is not literally the only material in the film. See Netflix’s title page and Tudum’s explainer.

The shooting itself is not shown on video. Instead, the film draws on recordings from before and after the event to reconstruct what happened.
What happened in Ocala?
The documentary follows an escalating dispute involving children playing near Lorincz’s home and complaints to police. According to Tudum, the film’s chronology begins in fall 2022, when Lorincz complained about noise and trash. On June 2, 2023, she reported that Owens was threatening her and trying to break down her door; two minutes later, she called again to say she had shot Owens through the door. Owens died at a hospital despite emergency responders’ efforts. Lorincz was arrested on June 6, 2023. Tudum reports that she was found guilty of manslaughter in 2024 and sentenced to 25 years in prison: Netflix Tudum’s account of the events.

Why is it described as “filmed” in Ocala?
For a conventional narrative film, “where was it filmed?” usually means where the crew shot scenes. Here, the phrase refers to the real location represented by archival recordings: police officers’ cameras captured visits in the Ocala neighborhood, and the documentary’s editors shaped that material into a film. The distinction matters because the footage documents real police responses rather than a recreation by actors.
