Kate watched the ceremony from a balcony of the nearby Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the spot where Camilla would normally have stood beside her.
What the Palace said
The explanation came from Buckingham Palace, in a statement attributed to the Palace rather than to a named official and reported by the Guardian and the Associated Press on 9 November 2024:
“Following doctors’ guidance to ensure a full recovery from a seasonal chest infection, and to protect others from any potential risk, Her Majesty will not attend this weekend’s Remembrance events.”
The Palace added that missing the events was a great disappointment to Camilla, that she would mark the occasion privately at home, and that she hoped to return to public duties early the following week. Those were plans stated at the time. They are not a record of what followed, and the sources do not say whether the infection was still active when she resumed engagements.

Which events she missed
The absence covered the whole Remembrance weekend, not only the Sunday service. The table below sets out the two events and where each person was expected to be.

How the Sunday service ran
The UK’s National Service of Remembrance is held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall. Official guidance for the 2024 service, dated 19 September 2024 and updated on 10 November, gave 11am as the start time for the national two-minute silence and the Cenotaph service, with the service scheduled to conclude at 11:25. King Charles led the ceremony that year. The guidance commemorates British and Commonwealth military and civilian personnel who served in the two world wars and in later conflicts.

What is and is not established
- Established: the Palace gave a medical reason, a seasonal chest infection with doctors’ advice, and linked it to protecting others from risk.
- Not established: any specific diagnosis, medical detail, or a motive beyond the Palace’s stated rationale. Nothing in the reporting points to a dispute over protocol or to a change in the ceremony.
- Kate’s situation: Kate’s own health is not part of the explanation for Camilla’s absence, and the two should not be read as connected.
