The Royal Collection Trust documents the official engagement portraits of Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, taken by photographer Dorothy Wilding in July 1947. That record fixes the engagement period, but it does not describe the ring or say where it is kept. The Trust’s general overview of the Royal Collection explains how the collection is held and managed, yet it does not name this ring as one of its objects. A general statement about custody therefore cannot be read as a statement about this specific piece.
The ring’s reported design and provenance
ABC News has described the ring as a three-carat diamond solitaire surrounded by ten smaller diamonds. According to that reporting, the smaller stones came from a tiara that belonged to Prince Philip’s mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg. These details are secondary reporting. They describe how the ring was made, not where it is now, and they should not be treated as a catalogue entry.
When you see “three carats,” it refers to the central diamond. It is not a valuation, a measure of the ring’s current condition, or evidence of its owner.

Where the answer gets confused
The most common source of error is the wedding ring. One secondary report says the Queen was buried with her wedding ring after her death in September 2022. That report does not say the engagement ring was buried with her, and it does not say who inherited it. The two rings are separate pieces, and a statement about one should not be applied to the other.
Claims that a ring is “in the Royal Collection,” “held by the family,” or “on display” need an explicit source. Without one, they are speculation, and they should not be presented as competing answers to the question.

What would change the answer
The answer would change only with a documented record: an official announcement, a catalogue entry from the Royal Collection Trust, or a credible report of a sale, bequest, or public loan. Until one appears, the accurate answer is that the ring’s location is not publicly confirmed.
