Accounts do document a severe childhood school beating and facial injuries, but none confirms that the beating caused this particular scar. The scar-specific explanation sometimes linked to his childhood remains speculation.
Is the origin of Musk’s cheek scar confirmed?
No. A 2020 Tech Times article said there was “no official story” about the scar’s origin. It suggested a childhood explanation based on photographs, but did not cite a primary source confirming it. That makes it a theory, not a verified biographical or medical fact. Tech Times’ scar-specific article is useful for understanding where the question and speculation appeared, not for establishing the scar’s cause.
It is important to distinguish two claims: Musk experienced serious violence as a child, which is supported by published accounts and his own remarks; that violence caused the visible cheek mark, which these sources do not establish.
What is documented about Musk’s childhood injuries?
The school beating described in Walter Isaacson’s biography
A 2023 CBS News excerpt from Walter Isaacson’s biography Elon Musk recounts a group attack at school. Musk was kicked, pushed down concrete steps, hospitalized, and missed a week of school. The account says that he later had corrective surgery for tissue inside his nose. It does not identify the visible cheek scar as an injury from that incident. Read the CBS News excerpt.

Isaacson’s account on PBS
In a 2024 Firing Line interview, Isaacson summarized the beating by saying Musk’s face was so disfigured that he had to go to the hospital. Isaacson also spoke about physical and psychological scars in a broader sense. That wording describes the severity and aftermath of the attack; it is not confirmation that the particular cheek mark came from it. Watch the PBS Firing Line interview.
What has Musk said about his childhood?
In a 2018 60 Minutes interview, correspondent Lesley Stahl asked Musk whether he had a happy childhood. He answered, “No, it was terrible.” Asked why, he said, “It was very violent. It was not a happy childhood.” When Stahl referred to school bullying, Musk replied, “I was almost beaten to death, if you would call that bullied.” These remarks support the account of a violent and unhappy childhood, but Musk did not discuss or identify his cheek scar in that exchange. Does the scar prove childhood trauma?
No. The reported beating is evidence of a serious adverse experience, but the scar’s appearance cannot, by itself, establish when or how it happened. Nor do these biographical accounts amount to a medical assessment or diagnosis. The responsible conclusion is limited: childhood violence is documented, while a causal link between that violence and Musk’s visible cheek scar is unconfirmed.
