NBCUniversal describes him as the Crown Prince of Winkie County, a student at Shiz University who looks carefree but is not quite what he seems. Bailey himself frames the character as someone whose easy charm rests on privilege while he is, at heart, in a state of quiet rebellion.
Who Fiyero is in the 2024 film
Fiyero enters the story as a devil-may-care student at Shiz University, the school where Elphaba and Glinda first meet. The NBCUniversal character guide, published November 14, 2024, presents him as a royal whose carefree surface is part of his appeal and part of the misdirection. The film gives him the full name Fiyero Tigelaar, and the guide places him in the line of the Crown Prince of Winkie County.
That combination matters for the story. A prince who seems untroubled by consequences becomes the lens through which the film tests how far privilege can insulate someone from the choices around them.
“Dancing Through Life” and his role in the Elphaba–Glinda story
Fiyero’s introduction comes through the opening number “Dancing Through Life,” performed at the Ozdust Ballroom, where he brings the students together. Composer Stephen Schwartz, interviewed by TIME, describes the number as the moment that establishes Fiyero’s philosophy. Schwartz also treats it as a turning point in how Elphaba and Glinda relate to each other.

So Fiyero is more than a romantic lead. His social energy changes the dynamic between the two central women, and the rest of the plot builds on that shift.
Elphaba and Fiyero on screen
The film’s relationship between Elphaba and Fiyero develops through shared action and growing affection rather than a single declaration. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s press release for the home-media edition describes two scenes that show this progression: a forest sequence in which the pair come to care for a lost lion cub, and a separate scene in which Elphaba struggles to be honest about her feelings for him. The release does not give a date for these descriptions beyond the home-media announcement.

How Bailey reads the character
In a TIME interview published September 30, 2025, Bailey described Fiyero’s development this way: “Fiyero’s got an easy charm, which comes with his easy glow of privilege, but it feels like he’s in a state of quiet rebellion.” That reading explains why the character can seem light in early scenes and still carry weight later. The charm is real, but it is also the thing the story asks him to question.
Where the character comes from: novel, musical and film
The franchise begins with Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The 2024 film does not adapt the novel directly. Its stated basis is the stage musical, which NBCUniversal dates to a Broadway premiere in 2003. The movie is the first of a two-part screen adaptation.

This is later-story information. TIME reported that Wicked: For Good would show a grand wedding between Fiyero and Glinda, a departure from the stage show. The official Universal page for the sequel also describes Glinda preparing to marry Prince Fiyero, played by Bailey. These details belong to the second film and should not be read as events in the 2024 movie.
