The film adaptation is scheduled to open in North American theaters on November 20, 2026. These are two separate dates: the book has been available for more than a year, while the movie is still upcoming.
When the book came out
Scholastic published Sunrise on the Reaping on March 18, 2025. It is Collins’s prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy, and the publisher released it in print, ebook, and audio formats on that date.
When the movie opens
Lionsgate announced on June 6, 2024 that the film would open in North American theaters on November 20, 2026. That announcement is the only studio source behind the date, and it covers North American theaters only. It does not establish a worldwide rollout, a release date in other countries, or a streaming date. As of this writing, the North American opening is about six weeks away. Release dates set this far ahead can move, so check Lionsgate’s current announcements before making travel or ticket plans.
The same 2024 announcement said Francis Lawrence was “in talks to direct” the film at that time. That wording reflects the state of the project in June 2024. It is not a current confirmation of his role or of the full cast, and no newer studio source in this article confirms either.

What the prequel covers
The novel is set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games. It opens on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games, the Second Quarter Quell. Its publisher’s synopsis follows Haymitch Abernathy from District 12. The Quarter Quell takes twice as many tributes from each district, Haymitch is selected, and he travels to the Capitol with three other District 12 tributes.
Readers who know the original trilogy will recognize Haymitch as the older mentor character, and the book gives his backstory. The film announcement describes the same setting and opening point, so both the book and the movie start from the Quell.

Editions and formats
Scholastic offers the novel in several formats, and each has its own ISBN: hardcover, ebook, audio download, library audio download, and audio CD. The audiobook is narrated by Jefferson White. Two editions are worth distinguishing before you buy:
| Edition | Publication date | Identifier and details |
|---|---|---|
| Standard hardback (Scholastic Shop UK listing) | March 18, 2025 | 416 pages; ISBN 9780702340574. The listed price and stock are set by the retailer and may differ by market. |
| Collector’s edition (US hardcover) | November 4, 2025 | ISBN 9798225019280. Scholastic describes metallic foil cover details, stained edges with stenciled art, full-color floral endpapers, and exclusive back matter. |
| Ebook, audio download, library audio download, audio CD | March 18, 2025 (standard formats) | Each has its own ISBN; the individual ISBN values are not reproduced here. |
The collector’s edition is a later, design-focused release, not a replacement for the standard hardcover. Pick the format and edition by name when you search, and confirm the territory, because the same title can carry different ISBNs and prices in different markets.

In a Scholastic interview published with the book on March 18, 2025, Collins addressed a problem specific to prequels: many readers already know how some characters’ stories end. She answered with an example from Shakespeare:
“It’s another way to approach a story, but it has its advantages. If you look at Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, we learn in the prologue that the lovers will die. So you’re really not focused on what’s going to happen, but on how or why it happens.”

SaleHunger Games 5-Book Hardcover Box Set (The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Sunrise on the Reaping)
- Complete set for fans of dystopian fiction.
- Great for collectors and new readers alike.
- Ideal gift set for young adult readers.
Collins made this remark in conversation with Scholastic publisher and editor David Levithan. In the same interview she described Haymitch as having “a much greater capacity for hope and love and joy” than Coriolanus or Katniss, and said his voice carries the influence of the Seam and of Lenore Dove’s Covey background. These are Collins’s own observations about the character, not independent plot facts.

That figure covers print, ebook, and audiobook sales in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand since the March 18, 2025 publication date. It is not a worldwide total across all formats and territories.
