The most recent reporting, from August 2026, describes an unfinished screenplay, reported talks with Johnny Depp, and no officially announced title, plot, or release date. Depp’s return is under discussion, not confirmed, and Margot Robbie’s role has never been specified.

What producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said
Almost all of the current public information comes from one person, the film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer, speaking at different events. His remarks are the best guide to where the project is, but they are not a studio announcement, and his wording changed between interviews.
August 2026: talks and a script in progress
In August 2026, Bruckheimer said: “We’re talking to Johnny. We’re working on a screenplay. Hopefully we can get this done.” The line is the most recent producer comment on the project. It confirms that conversations are happening and that writing continues. It does not say that a deal exists, that a draft is complete, or that a start date is near.

September 2025: the script and two earlier drafts
At TheWrap’s TheGrill event in September 2025, Bruckheimer said: “We’re working on a script,” and added: “If we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen.” He also said the team had at one point been working from two scripts, that one of them had dropped out, and that the group had continued with the other. The remark makes clear that the film depends on the writing being finished before casting or production decisions can be made.
Franchise context from Disney, 2026
In a 2026 Walt Disney Company conversation with Bruckheimer, he described what has kept the series going: “They have compelling characters and humor. They’re a little scary. There’s romance. And, the fact is, there’s also an irreverent pirate — who, it turns out, has a good heart.” That is a view of the earlier films, not an update on the new one.

Johnny Depp: talks, not a deal
Bruckheimer’s August 2026 comment confirms that the producers have been talking to Depp. Earlier reporting by Variety Australia in 2025 said Bruckheimer had spoken to Depp about Jack Sparrow’s return to the series, and that Depp’s willingness would depend on what was written. Those two points together mean that a return is possible and being explored. They do not mean Depp has agreed to appear, that he has been offered a contract, or that his role has been written.
Margot Robbie: involved, but in what capacity is unknown
Robbie is the one part of the current picture that has been described in a way that could be misread. Bruckheimer said in September 2025 that “She’s still involved,” but he did not say whether she is attached as an actor, a producer, or in another role. Reporting has not established that she will star in the next film. Readers should treat her involvement as a credit-level detail that remains open, not as a casting announcement.

Two projects, one surviving script
The project’s history is the main source of confusion. Bruckheimer said two scripts had existed and that one had been dropped, but he has not said which one, and reporting has not confirmed whether Robbie’s project and the remaining film have been combined. The writing history also includes several writers. According to Bruckheimer’s 2025 comments, Ted Elliott had worked on the current script, and another writer was brought in to “fill in the blanks.”
Older coverage of earlier concepts is useful background, but it does not show which draft is current. Variety’s reporting on the project’s development is historical context, and a draft mentioned there should not be assumed to be the one being written now.

Is it a reboot?
The word “reboot” is a reader shorthand, not an official label. Reporting describes a new Pirates of the Caribbean film, and in some coverage it is called “Pirates of the Caribbean 6,” but none of the sources confirm whether the story restarts the series or continues it. Until Disney says what kind of film this is, a reboot, a sequel, or a Robbie-led spin-off remain unconfirmed possibilities.
Timeline of reported developments
- September 30, 2025: Bruckheimer tells TheWrap at TheGrill that a script is in progress, one of two earlier scripts has dropped out, Robbie is still involved, and Elliott has contributed to the current draft.
- August 13, 2026: Backstage’s overview says Disney has not announced a title or plot, and that story direction remains unclear.
- August 16, 2026: TheWrap reports Bruckheimer saying he and Depp are talking and the screenplay is still in progress. He does not announce casting.
What would count as confirmation
Until one of the following happens, treat any headline about a new film as reporting, not confirmation:
- An official Disney announcement that includes a title.
- A confirmed cast list, stated by the studio, not by a producer’s remark about talks.
- Confirmation that a finished screenplay exists and has been approved for production.
- A start of principal photography, reported by the studio or a major trade publication.
- A release date set by the studio.
Franchise background
The existing five films are the reason the project is still newsworthy. Backstage attributes more than $4.5 billion in worldwide box office to the five-film series. That is a secondary-source figure, not a current Disney accounting, and it covers the series as a whole rather than any single film.
