Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain became the subject of a public dispute in August 2025, after Del Rey posted an unreleased-song snippet naming Cain and Cain said Del Rey had blocked her on Instagram. Del Rey then described grievances involving Cain’s alleged past posts and comments. In March 2026, Del Rey objected to an Atlanta drag brunch themed around both artists and called Cain abusive. The public record establishes that these statements were made; it does not independently establish the underlying allegations or the intended meaning of every lyric.
What happened between Lana Del Rey and Ethel Cain?
The dispute played out through social media and news coverage rather than a jointly confirmed account from both artists. Del Rey’s August 2025 song snippet named Cain, and Del Rey later alleged that Cain had made hurtful posts and comments about her. Cain’s reported response was to say Del Rey had blocked her. The available reporting does not independently verify the block or Del Rey’s allegations.

In March 2026, Del Rey objected to an Atlanta drag brunch themed around the two performers. She called Cain “abusive,” but Stereogum reported that the reason for this characterization was unclear. These public exchanges support describing the situation as a dispute; they do not establish a personal or romantic relationship between the artists.
How the public dispute unfolded
August 13, 2025: Del Rey posts a song snippet
On August 13, Del Rey shared a clip of an unreleased song on Instagram. The FADER reported that it included the line, “Ethel Cain hated my Instagram post, think it’s cute reenacting my Chicago post.” Teen Vogue reported that Del Rey labeled the snippet “Track 13.” Neither report establishes that the song had an official title of “All About Ethel.” The FADER’s account and Teen Vogue’s coverage describe the clip as unreleased.

August 14, 2025: Cain says Del Rey blocked her
The next day, Cain posted an Instagram Story reading, “Update: Lana Del Rey has blocked Ethel Cain on Instagram.” This confirms that Cain made the claim, not that the account status was independently checked by the outlets reviewed. The FADER and Teen Vogue reported the Story.
August 14, 2025: Del Rey explains her grievance
In a comment on a Pop Base post, Del Rey alleged that Cain had shared side-by-side images of her with unflattering creatures or cartoon characters and made comments about her weight. Del Rey also said mutual friends had relayed other remarks and accused Cain of inserting herself into her personal life. These are Del Rey’s allegations, not independently established findings. The FADER and The Independent reported her comments.

March 2026: Del Rey objects to a drag brunch
Stereogum reported that Del Rey objected to an Atlanta venue’s Lana-versus-Ethel drag brunch. Del Rey wrote, “Sadly, none of this is funny. She’s abusive and that’s all there is to it,” and sent the venue a direct message reading “Fuck you.” The report said it was unclear why Del Rey characterized Cain as abusive. Stereogum’s March 2026 report documents the comments but does not explain the basis for the accusation.
Why did Lana Del Rey mention Ethel Cain in a song?
The snippet directly names Cain and refers to an Instagram post and a “Chicago post.” Some outlets and fans have interpreted the Chicago line as referring to photographs involving Jack Donoghue, who has been pictured with both artists. The “most famous girl at the Waffle House” line has likewise been read as an allusion to the headline of a 2022 New York Times profile of Cain. These are interpretations, not confirmed explanations from Del Rey. The available coverage identifies the track as unreleased and does not establish its official title or the intended reference behind every lyric. The FADER, Teen Vogue, and The Independent discuss the snippet and its possible context.

What was their earlier public connection?
Cain had spoken publicly about admiring Del Rey before the 2025 dispute. In a 2021 interview cited by Teen Vogue, Cain said she had been “hugely inspired by Lana” in high school and that Born to Die was the first CD she bought. In another 2021 interview quoted by the outlet, Cain said, “I love Lana, I love her older music. Her newer stuff doesn’t really resonate with me, but I’d be a liar to say I never loved Lana.”
Cain also distinguished her artistic outlook from Del Rey’s, saying she was “not super inspired by her” musically and discussing how their different views of America shaped her response to comparisons. Those remarks describe what Cain said in 2021; they do not establish the artists’ present relationship. Teen Vogue’s coverage recounts the earlier interviews.

What is confirmed, and what remains unverified?
- Reported public actions: Del Rey posted a snippet naming Cain; Cain posted that Del Rey had blocked her; Del Rey made allegations about Cain; and Del Rey later objected to the Atlanta drag brunch.
- Allegations, not findings: Del Rey’s claims about Cain’s older posts, comments and remarks relayed by mutual friends have not been independently established in the cited coverage.
- Interpretations, not confirmed intent: The proposed meanings of the “Chicago post” and “Waffle House” lyrics have not been confirmed by Del Rey.
- Uncertain material: Teen Vogue noted it could not confirm the accuracy of some screenshots circulating online that were attributed to Cain. The Independent said it contacted both artists’ representatives; its reviewed report did not provide a response from Cain to Del Rey’s underlying claims.
Keeping those distinctions clear matters: a reported post establishes that someone made a statement, not that the statement’s claims are true. The cited coverage describes a public dispute and photographs involving a third party, not a confirmed relationship between Del Rey and Cain.
