What is Season 4 about?
Netflix’s promotional synopsis says one catastrophic moment threatens the fragile peace Kate brokered between the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as her strained marriage to Hal. It also describes an alliance between Grace Penn and Hal around a plan to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon—one that could push the United States toward war. Kate and Todd Penn become uneasy allies against them.
That announcement sets up two connected strands: an international crisis and the effect of public office on the Wyler and Penn marriages. It is not a full account of the season, and the premiere is still upcoming. Creator, showrunner and executive producer Debora Cahn told Netflix Tudum, “This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd.” Cahn also described the season as “a lot of fun”; that is a promotional comment, not a review or a guarantee of audience response.

Who is returning?
The season’s four central characters are Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), President Grace Penn (Allison Janney) and Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford). Netflix says Janney, Whitford and Nana Mensah, who plays White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah, have been promoted to series regulars for Season 4. Netflix’s Media Center also names Ato Essandoh and Ali Ahn among the cast.
Where Season 3 left off
Netflix’s Season 3 guide says Grace Penn becomes president after President Rayburn’s death. In its Season 4 teaser report, Netflix says Kate begins to suspect Hal and Grace have double-crossed her, despite her marriage to Hal appearing close to recovery at the end of Season 3. Those developments provide context for the new setup, but the Season 4 premiere has not yet shown how the conflict unfolds.
