What Is Classical Music? A Beginner’s Guide to the Tradition and Its Periods

Classical music is a broad Western art-music tradition spanning more than a thousand years, not just the Classical Period of about 1750 to 1825. Here is how to tell them apart and begin listening.

Classical music is a broad tradition of Western art music, built from written scores, named composers, and performances in concert halls, opera houses, and homes. It spans more than a thousand years. The term is often used loosely for only one part of that history, the Classical Period of roughly 1750 to 1825, so the first useful step is to separate the two.

The broad tradition and the Classical Period

In everyday Western usage, “classical music” names an entire family of traditions. David Novy, author of the beginner guide Save Our Symphonies, puts it this way: “What we collectively call ‘classical music’ is not a single style but a family of traditions spanning more than a thousand years.” Novy’s guide says the tradition encompasses at least six historical periods.

The “Classical Period” is only one of those periods. A Royal Conservatory of Music teaching text dates it to approximately 1750 to 1825 and uses Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven as its central figures. Listeners who say “I like classical music” usually mean the whole tradition, while a music history class saying “the Classical style” means that narrower window. Because the word “classical” also appears in discussions of non-Western art-music traditions, specify “Western classical music” when precision matters.

The main periods at a glance

A basic map of the tradition includes the following broad periods. Their boundaries overlap and are not exact, and different teaching sources draw them differently.

  • Medieval and Renaissance music, the earliest layers of the written Western tradition.
  • Baroque, which precedes the Classical Period and includes the work of many composers who wrote for church, court, and public audiences.
  • Classical, approximately 1750 to 1825, with Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven as central examples.
  • Romantic, which follows and is associated with expanded orchestras and more personal expression.
  • Later music, covering the periods after Romanticism that the broader guides group together.

Labels help with orientation, but they do not define every piece. A work may combine features of two periods, and some composers are hard to place in one category.

Forms and listening formats you will meet

Much of the tradition is organized around recognizable forms and settings. The Royal Conservatory’s text discusses the symphony, concerto, sonata, serenade, and string quartet. Other common entry points include opera, chamber music, and orchestral works. These are typical ways the music is encountered, not requirements that every piece must meet.

Knowing a few forms makes listening easier. A symphony is usually a large work for full orchestra. A concerto features a solo instrument against an orchestra. A string quartet is a chamber work for two violins, viola, and cello. Each form is one of several ways composers in these periods organized music.

How the tradition changed in the nineteenth century

Classical music developed alongside changing social conditions. In an October 2004 essay for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Jayson Kerr Dobney of the Museum’s Department of Musical Instruments describes how musicians who had commonly worked for churches and courts increasingly performed for wider publics and taught music as the middle class grew. The essay also describes larger orchestras, expanded concert spectacle, and the central place of the piano in homes.

The piano shows this shift clearly. According to the same essay, it served as a solo instrument and as an accompaniment in domestic settings, and smaller, less expensive pianos were made for home use. Knowing this context explains why much classical repertoire was written for public halls and private parlors alike.

How to start listening

You do not need prior knowledge to begin. The following approaches work independently or together.

Start with a piece or composer you already like

Novy’s guide recommends beginning with a work or composer that catches your interest, then using the period as a way to find related music. If a film score or a slow movement caught your ear, look for earlier or later composers who write in a similar mood.

Listen for one feature at a time

Choose a short, recognizable work and follow a single element on each listen: a recurring melody, a sudden change in volume, a contrasting section, or the way instruments answer one another. The Royal Conservatory’s teaching text models this kind of guided listening with works by Vivaldi, Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.

Try forms beyond the orchestra

Orchestral music is only one part of the repertoire. String quartets and serenades offer a smaller, more intimate listening experience, and a good first step is to hear how few instruments can carry a full musical argument.

Use books, recordings, and concerts

New Zealand’s AnyQuestions, a government education resource, points readers toward concert recordings and to introductory books, including a beginner guide and a question-and-answer book. A live concert is one route into the music, but listening at home with recordings is an equally valid start.

Limits of the definition

The term does not settle every debate about boundaries. Sources differ on exact period dates, on how many periods to recognize, and on which later works belong under the label. The Library of Congress’s Music Division describes its holdings as “numbering approximately 20.5 million items and spanning more than 1000 years of Western music history and practice.” That figure describes the collection, not the number of classical music listeners or the size of the tradition.

Finally, this article covers Western art music. Art-music traditions in other parts of the world have their own histories, forms, and vocabularies, and they fall outside the scope described here.
