A Private Story on Snapchat is a Story that only its creator can add Snaps to, and the creator decides which friends can view it. Snapchat marks Private Stories with a lock icon. “Private” describes the audience inside Snapchat only. It does not stop viewers from screenshotting or screen recording what they see.
How a Private Story works
Who can add Snaps
Only the creator can add Snaps to a Private Story. Friends on the audience list can watch it but cannot contribute, which is the main difference from a Shared Story.
Who can see it
The creator chooses the viewers. Friends who are left off the audience are not notified that the Private Story exists, so they have no prompt to ask about it.
Where it appears
Eligible friends see Private Story Snaps mixed in with the creator’s My Story. On Android, Snapchat notes that Private Stories and My Stories may appear separately, so the layout you see can differ from what iPhone users see.

How to create a Private Story
Snapchat Support describes the following steps. Menu names change as the app is updated, so if a label does not match, look for the closest equivalent in the same area.
- Open Snapchat and go to My Account.
- Tap New Private Story. If you already have a Story, the option may appear as + New Story.
- Choose which friends can view the Story.
- Give the Story a name and save it.
An account can hold up to 20 Private or Shared Stories at one time, according to Snapchat Support. The support article does not state a publication date, so check the limit in the current app if you depend on it.

Private Story, Shared Story, or public My Story
These three options are often confused because all of them let you post to a group rather than to a single friend. They differ in who can add Snaps and who the audience is.
| Option | Who can add Snaps | Who can view | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private Story | Only the creator | Friends the creator selects | Marked with a lock icon; excluded friends are not told it exists |
| Shared Story | The creator and selected friends | Selected friends | Snapchat’s capture warning is written about Private Stories; it does not separately address Shared Stories |
| My Story · Public | The creator’s posts to My Story | Friends, followers, and anyone on Snapchat | A broader audience than either private format |
The audience chosen for each Snap is attached to that Snap when it is posted. Changing your settings later does not change the audience for Snaps that were already sent.

What viewers can save
The word “private” describes who sees the content, not what they can keep. Snapchat Support states that viewers of a Private Story can take a screenshot or screen record it. The support page puts the point plainly: the people who view a Private Story “can always screenshot or screen record, so don’t share content that you wouldn’t want someone to save or share.”
Saving rights also depend on your role in the Story:

- The creator can save the entire Story.
- A participant in someone else’s Story can save only the Snaps that participant added.
- When a viewer saves a Snap, Snapchat says the person who posted it sees a screenshot icon in read receipts.
Deleting Snaps and what deletion cannot undo
Creators can delete their own Snaps from a Story. In a Private or Shared Story, the creator can also delete Snaps that other contributors added.
Deletion has limits. Snapchat cautions that removing a Snap from its servers and from friends’ devices may not happen immediately, and it may not happen at all in every case. A viewer who captured the content before it was deleted still has that copy.
