It was not a separate app or subscription there. Disney announced that Hulu would replace Star as the international general-entertainment brand on Disney+ beginning October 8, 2025, so as of October 8, 2026, Star is former branding in those markets. The name still causes confusion because Star+ was a different product: a separate Latin American streaming service that Disney later folded into Disney+.
What Star was inside Disney+
Star was a dedicated brand tile within the Disney+ app. It sat alongside Disney’s family, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic offerings and carried general-entertainment programming that Disney described as broader than those franchise brands. Disney’s February 23, 2021 launch announcement described four content types:

- Movies and television series from outside the core Disney franchise brands.
- Documentaries, a category of particular interest to documentary viewers.
- Star-branded originals commissioned for the tile.
- Local productions made for the individual markets where Star was offered.
The launch announcement named Big Sky, Love, Victor and Solar Opposites as examples of titles then streaming in select markets. Those were launch-era examples. They do not indicate that any of them are available in your country today, because Disney says catalogs differ by region.
Where and when Star launched
Disney launched Star on February 23, 2021, in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Western Europe and Singapore. The announcement said the broader rollout would include additional markets later in 2021. Accessibility of individual titles varied by region at launch, so two viewers in different countries could see different Star libraries even within the same tile.

The launch announcement also contained a statement from Rebecca Campbell, then Chairman, International Operations and Direct-to-Consumer at The Walt Disney Company:
“Disney+ has touched the lives of nearly a hundred million people around the globe by providing a home for exceptional storytelling from the beloved brands of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, and today’s launch of the Star-branded international general entertainment offering marks an exciting expansion for the service.”

That is a 2021 company statement. The “nearly a hundred million” figure is Disney’s wording from that date and is not a current subscriber count.
What replaced Star: Hulu
Disney announced on October 2, 2025 that Hulu would become the global general-entertainment brand on Disney+, effective October 8, 2025. Hulu is the successor name for the role Star had played in international markets. If you see a Hulu label on the general-entertainment section of Disney+ in those markets, that is the current brand, and the Star tile is the older one.

Star+ was a separate Latin American service
Star+ is the name most likely to be confused with Star on Disney+, but it was a different product. In Latin America, Disney initially offered Star+ as its own streaming service, combining general entertainment with ESPN live sports. Disney’s 2024 annual report, in its Direct-to-Consumer section, says the Star+ and Disney+ services were merged into one Disney+ product at the end of June 2024.
Older articles, forum posts and screenshots that describe Star+ as a standalone subscription predate that merger. They are not describing the current Disney+ service in the region.

Checking what is available where you live
Star’s catalog was never identical from country to country, and the same holds now. Disney’s Help Center article “Where is Disney+ available?”, dated October 6, 2026, states that title availability may differ by location. Travelers can stream the titles available in the region they are visiting. For any specific documentary or series, check the Disney+ app or website in your own country rather than relying on a Star-era listing.
- If you see the Star tile in an older screenshot, treat it as historical.
- If a guide describes Star+ as a current Latin American subscription, check its date against the June 2024 merger.
- If a title you remember from Star is missing, its regional licence may have ended, and it may not be available in your market.
Disney has not published a current market list for Star, so any country-level claim should be verified against the official Disney+ availability information for that country.
