Participating stores host in-store activity, often including artist performances, and stock special releases made for the day. The first official event took place on 19 April 2008. The most recent edition in the official UK and Australian material was held on Saturday 18 April 2026, so as of October 2026 that event has already passed. Official UK guidance tells readers to watch the news page and social channels for the next date.
Where the idea came from
Record Store Day was not started by a label or a distributor. The Associated Press reports that independent shop owners and employees developed the idea at a gathering in 2007. Two co-owners of Josey Records gave the agency their views on the event. Waric Cameron, co-owner of Josey Records, said: “For us, records have never gone out of style.” His business partner, Luke Sardello, also a Josey Records co-owner, described the day as “It’s like the Super Bowl of record stores.” These are the opinions of shop owners, not measured findings about the wider music industry.
When Record Store Day takes place
The event is held once a year, on a Saturday in April in the sources reviewed here. The table below lists the dates that the official material and reporting establish. Dates for other years are not covered by these sources.
| Date | What it refers to | Source and date of report |
|---|---|---|
| 19 April 2008 | First official Record Store Day | Record Store Day UK and the Associated Press, reporting in 2024 |
| Saturday 18 April 2026 | The 2026 event day, when RSD exclusives went on sale at participating shops | Record Store Day UK and Record Store Day Australia official sites |
| 8pm, Monday 20 April 2026 | Time from which remaining products could be listed on participating store websites (UK 2026 page) | Record Store Day UK About page |
No later event date is established in the official material reviewed. Do not treat the 18 April 2026 date as the next one. To find the next date, use the following steps.

- Follow the official social media channels for the same country, since the UK FAQ also points to them.
Where releases are sold
RSD exclusives are sold through participating independent record shops. The UK FAQ says these releases are available from participating shops on the event day. The Australian site describes the same over-the-counter model and states that the Record Store Day website is not itself a store. A release list therefore tells you what exists, not where you can buy it.
Before you travel to a shop, check the following:
- That the shop is listed as a participating store on the official regional site.
- That the shop has confirmed stock of the specific title and format you want, because a release list does not promise that every store received every item.
- That the shop’s own rules for the day apply, including any limits per customer and whether sales are first-come, first-served. The 2026 UK release-list announcement described sales as first-come, first-served at participating shops.
Leftover stock and online sales
Shops are not required to sell every item on the day. The UK FAQ gives a general rule that participating shops may sell remaining stock online one week after the event. The UK 2026 page is more specific: it said remaining products could be listed on participating store websites from 8pm on Monday 20 April 2026. These are two different statements, one general and one tied to a single edition, so do not assume the 2026 timing applies to a future event.

Release counts from different sources describe different scopes, so they cannot be added together or compared as if they measured the same thing.

Reading a release list
Release lists use labels such as exclusive, limited edition and first release. Each regional list defines what its labels mean, so an item marked exclusive on one country’s list is not necessarily exclusive everywhere. Check the official list for your region and read the label definitions there before assuming a title is rare or globally unavailable.
