Noah Kahan is best described as a folk-pop singer-songwriter. Folk is the dominant strain on Stick Season, pop hooks and rock-leaning textures sit alongside it, and reference labels such as indie folk and contemporary singer-songwriter cover parts of his wider catalog. Genre names are shorthand, so the useful question is which label fits which album and which part of his work you are asking about.
The short answer
If you need one phrase, use folk-pop. It fits the widest share of his work without stretching either word. Two qualifications apply. First, the phrase describes his catalog as a whole, while Stick Season, his third full-length album and released on 2022-10-14 according to Universal Music Canada, leans more firmly toward folk than the material he played before it. Second, genre labels are descriptive. Critics, reference databases and publications choose different words for the same songs, and the sections below show where they agree and where they diverge.

What Kahan says about the shift
The clearest first-person account comes from a Grammy.com interview titled “Noah Kahan’s Big Year: How The ‘Stick Season’ Singer Became A Folk-Pop Hero.” Kahan recalled that much of his set at the time was more pop-leaning, and said of the song that it was “definitely more folk-leaning.” He added that the response showed him a demand for sing-along folk anthems, which pushed him to focus more on folk music and storytelling.
He also framed the change as a return rather than a reinvention: “I think I was always making folk music, and I would always gravitate toward those songs.” Read together, the two remarks suggest that folk was his underlying instinct, and that Stick Season is the point where that instinct became the center of his sound. The interview is the artist’s own account, so it explains intent; the other sources below test how the music is heard from the outside.

The table shows that no source contradicts folk-pop outright. The disagreement is about emphasis: the folk side is stressed by the artist and by the storytelling framing, while the pop and rock side is stressed by reference categories and by the Billboard Canada description.
Folk versus pop: the axis that explains the overlap
Most confusion about Kahan’s genre comes from treating “folk” and “pop” as competing answers. A more useful way to read his music is as a spectrum with two poles: folk storytelling and an organic, acoustic feel on one side, and pop hooks and rock-oriented production on the other. Each album sits at a different point on that line.

Stick Season (2022)
The album sits nearest the folk pole in the artist’s own telling, and its New England framing supports that reading. Its folk identity rests on place and narrative as much as on instrumentation. Its pop side is in the hooks, which the Georgia Public Broadcasting comparison to Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers places within a pop-folk tradition. Calling it indie folk-pop is accurate if you want to stress the independent, story-led character.
Earlier material
Kahan’s earlier set, as he described it, leaned more pop. If you are listening to live or early material rather than the album, the pop-leaning label carries more weight than it does for Stick Season. Because the artist’s own description is the only source that addresses this period, treat the distinction as his account rather than a measured analysis of each song.

The Great Divide (2026)
The AP review presents the 2026 album as a continuation of the folksy, introspective approach, with more room for piano and rock-pop detours. That makes folk-pop still the right umbrella, with the understanding that the rock-pop share is larger here than on Stick Season.
Choosing the right label for your question
- Asking about Stick Season: use folk-leaning folk-pop or indie folk-pop.
- Asking about his catalog overall: use folk-pop, or pop/rock singer-songwriter if you want the reference-database framing.
- Asking about The Great Divide: use folk-pop and note the piano and rock-pop detours.
- Seeing “Pop/Rock” on a reference site: that is the top-level AllMusic category, not a contradiction of folk-pop.
What genre labels cannot settle
Chart positions and stream counts describe commercial performance, not genre, so they do not help answer this question and are not used here. Genre is also a moving target across a career. A label that fits one album well can overstate another, which is why the axis above is more reliable than any single word.
