At the end of Entrapment (1999), Mac appears to hand Gin over to the FBI at the Pudu train station, then reverses course. He reveals that he made a deal with the agency, gives Gin a gun and documents, and lets her escape. She uses the gun to make it look as though she is holding him at bay, boards a train, switches trains, and comes back to him. The two leave together, and Gin proposes another heist.

How the station scene plays out

The ending runs in a fixed sequence, so it helps to read it step by step.

  1. After the tower heist and their escape, Gin waits for Mac at the station.
  2. Mac arrives with Thibadeaux and FBI agents. He explains that he was arrested two years earlier and agreed to help the FBI catch Gin. This is the point where Thibadeaux’s FBI role is revealed.
  3. Mac asks for a minute alone with her and tells her he loves her. He says he surrendered $7 billion to the FBI and kept $1 billion.
  4. He slips her a gun and documents.
  5. Gin points the gun at him so the moment looks like a hostage standoff, and boards a train.
  6. The FBI pursues her while Mac stays at the station.
  7. Gin has changed trains. She returns, the two reunite, and they leave together. Her suggestion of another job closes the film.

Plot accounts and the screenplay agree on this order of events. Because the sequence depends on what the characters say and do rather than on any outside record, it is best read as the film’s own logic.

Why Mac lets Gin go

The central twist is not that Mac secretly worked with the FBI. He did, and the film says so openly at the station. The twist is that, having made that deal, he chooses to free her anyway. The declaration of love is what makes that choice personal rather than tactical, and the return of Gin, who was never really captured, is what turns the reversal into a partnership.

#1 Best Overall

Read this way, the apparent betrayal is not a betrayal at all. Mac’s arrangement with the FBI is the setup, and his decision at the station is the payoff.

The $7 billion and $1 billion line

Mac tells Gin he surrendered $7 billion to the FBI and kept $1 billion. That is a statement made by a character in the scene, not a verified financial outcome. The ending does not include a later accounting of what either party actually receives, so the couple’s money position after the station is not settled by the film.

Does Gin come back to Mac?

Yes. Gin’s return is the final turn of the ending. The film closes on a new partnership rather than a return to their earlier lives, with Gin proposing another heist. The movie does not show that heist, so the future of their criminal partnership and romance remains open-ended.

What the sources support

  • Plot accounts describe the station sequence, Mac’s FBI deal, the gun and documents, the train switch, and the reunion. They are the basis for the step-by-step order above.
  • The screenplay records Mac saying “I love you” at the station. The screenplay gives no named author or role for that line, so it should be attributed to Mac as dialogue, not to a real person.
  • Apple TV’s listing identifies the film as a 1999 thriller starring Sean Connery, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Ving Rhames, directed by Jon Amiel, with a runtime of 1 hour 52 minutes.

The $7 billion and $1 billion figures are plot details, not external statistics, and no outside source verifies them.
