She grew up on Krypton and witnessed its destruction as a teenager; Clark arrived on Earth as a baby and was raised by the Kents. Clark says Kara gets drunk by partying on planets with red suns, where her powers do not work and alcohol can affect her.
Who is Supergirl in Superman?
This is Kara Zor-El, not a different character using the Supergirl name from another screen or comic-book continuity. DC identifies her as Superman’s cousin and says Milly Alcock plays her in the new DCU. DC’s interview with Alcock describes a character shaped by grief and loss, rather than a younger version of Clark with the same upbringing.
Where did Supergirl come from in Superman?
Kara came from Krypton. Unlike Clark, who was sent to Earth as an infant and grew up with the Kents, she experienced Krypton’s destruction as a teenager. That difference helps explain why the two cousins can share Kryptonian powers yet see the world differently: Clark’s life on Earth began with a new family, while Kara lost the people and home she had known.
DC’s account of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow says Kara was sent to Earth to look after baby Kal-El, but arrived after he had grown up and no longer needed her protection. The same account describes her struggle to find a purpose while living in Superman’s shadow. DC’s interview with Alcock also connects Kara’s outlook to her traumatic past.

Why is Supergirl drunk?
Clark explains the scene: Kara parties on planets with red suns. In the story’s stated explanation, her powers do not work under a red sun, so alcohol affects her. It is a fictional premise for the cameo, not evidence of a clinical alcohol-use diagnosis.
The red-sun setting also connects the cameo to the source material for the 2026 Supergirl film. DC describes Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as an inspiration for the film and explains that the red-sun setting lets the audience see Kara without her powers. DC’s interview with Alcock discusses her characterization, while DC’s trailer breakdown explains the film’s connection to the comic.

How the film’s Kara differs from Clark—and the comic
The film draws on Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s limited comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but it is an adaptation, not a scene-for-scene retelling. The two versions share the central setup and characters while changing details. For example, DC says the comic opens with Kara turning 21 and celebrating with Krypto on a red-sun planet; its trailer breakdown says the film’s trailer shows Kara toasting her 23rd birthday. Those birthdays belong to separate versions of the story, not one definitive timeline.
DC has also emphasized that screenwriter Ana Nogueira’s film differs from the comic. Nogueira described her approach as trying to “adapt the feeling.” DC’s trailer breakdown covers the film’s teaser details, and DC’s interview with Nogueira discusses the adaptation.
