Disney stopped producing Disney Infinity in 2016 and ended its online and community services on March 3, 2017. The game did not switch off all at once, though. Some versions were designed to keep running offline, and others were removed or left unsupported. Whether a copy works today depends on the platform and the specific copy you own, and the reporting from 2016 and early 2017 cannot confirm that for any current device.
What Disney decided and why
On May 10, 2016, Disney announced that it would discontinue production of Disney Infinity. TheWrap reported the company’s explanation: limited growth in the toys-to-life market, combined with high development costs, had created a challenging business model. Disney also said it would stop developing console games in-house and move to a licensing model instead.
TheWrap reported a planned $147 million charge linked to the discontinuation and quoted Disney CEO Robert Iger on the reasoning: “We just feel that it’s a changing space and we’re just better off at managing the risk that that business delivers by licensing rather than publishing.” The charge was a planned figure in the May 2016 reporting, not a final accounting result.
John Blackburn, identified in contemporaneous coverage as Disney Infinity’s senior vice president, framed the decision to fans. MacRumors quoted his statement: “By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you–our fans–and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.”

The game had launched in 2013, so the production stop came just under three years after release. The cancellation did not immediately remove the last planned content. In 2016 reporting, Disney still planned three Alice Through the Looking Glass characters and a Finding Dory play set.
How the shutdown unfolded
Disney retired the game in stages rather than in one switch-off. The phased plan was reported by MacRumors and Game Informer on July 29, 2016, and the sequence below reflects the dates given in that coverage and in Disney’s own community announcements.

- Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes (2.0 Edition) Marvel's The Avengers Play Set
- May 10, 2016: Disney announces the end of production.
- By September 30, 2016: Some mobile and PC editions are removed or shut down, and storefront access for those editions ends. On the same date, Steam’s community announcement confirmed that Disney Infinity 3.0 would remain playable after the servers closed.
- March 3, 2017: The final scheduled date. All remaining online services and community features end.
The shutdown removed online features, including multiplayer and community features such as shared creations. It did not remove the single-player content that players had already bought, at least for the console editions that were designed to keep working offline.
What “shut down” meant for each version
The table below separates what the 2016 and early 2017 reporting said would happen from what can be confirmed today. Where the sources do not address a version’s current state, the table says so.

Can you still play it today?
The fair answer is “maybe, on some setups.” The offline design was real, but it was a 2016 plan, and nothing in the sources confirms how it holds up on hardware and operating systems released since then. Before you rely on any copy, check these points:
- Console: Confirm that the disc or digital copy and the console’s system software still run it. Offline play is expected, but the sources do not promise it on every system update.
- Steam 3.0 Gold Edition: This is the most clearly documented path, because its content package was built to run after the servers closed. Check that your Steam account still owns the Gold Edition and that the game launches on your current operating system.
- Mobile and Apple TV: Assume these versions are unsupported unless you can confirm otherwise, since the 2016 reporting placed them among the retired editions.
- Any version: Expect no online multiplayer, Toy Box sharing, or other community features. Those services ended on March 3, 2017.
Do you need the figures?
In the original design, figures unlocked playable characters and activities, and the game expanded through figures and play sets. Console play therefore depends on the physical toys you have, and the exact requirements vary by game entry and platform. Check the specific bundle and its compatibility before buying used figures or an Infinity Base.

The PC edition takes a different route. Disney’s November 3, 2015 Steam community announcement described web codes that could bring supported physical-product content into the PC version. The 3.0 Gold Edition is different again, because it included the released characters, play sets, and Power Discs in one package. If you want the widest set of characters without buying figures, that package is the cleaner path.
When shopping for a used starter set, search for “Disney Infinity 3.0 starter set,” and separately for “Disney Infinity figures” or “Disney Infinity Infinity Base.” Listings change, and the sources here do not establish current prices or stock.
Disney Infinity ended as a live, expanding game. Some versions survived as offline games, and the 3.0 Gold Edition was built to outlast the servers, but it was never guaranteed to work on every device after 2017.
