Five former students of Francesca Orsini describe her scholarship as a study of how literary texts and cultures are made through print, performance, multilingual circulation and historical context. Their examples run from early twentieth-century Hindi periodicals and popular publishing to oral-literate genres and multilingual literary worlds in North India and the Indian Ocean. The account comes from a Scroll.in essay published on 26 October 2025 and written by Aakriti Mandhwani, Priyanka Basu, Raahi Adhya, Chinmay Sharma and Kanupriya Dhingra. It is an appreciative essay by former students, not an independent review or a full evaluation of Orsini’s work, so the claims below are what these five contributors say they learned.

What the essay is, and what it is not

The essay is a set of entry points rather than a survey. Each contributor writes from a different part of Orsini’s output, and the introduction makes clear that it selects a few monographs and collaborative projects rather than covering everything she has written. Read it as testimony from people trained by her, and treat its praise as attributed opinion. The former students do not argue identical positions, and their sections should not be merged into one verdict.

The core strands of the work

Across the five sections, four threads recur: print as the medium through which literary culture forms, performance and oral tradition as a parallel literary world, multilingual contact as the normal condition of literary life, and a refusal to treat local literatures as self-contained. The sections below follow each contributor’s own emphasis.

Print history and the periodical archive (Aakriti Mandhwani)

Mandhwani’s section centres on Orsini’s use of primary sources, especially periodicals. She describes the study of Hindi periodicals as a way into how literary forms and genres shaped the public sphere, and how women gained a presence in it. Her example is Chand, a periodical whose confessional mode, in her reading, could widen the space available to women in public life. She also points to the close reading of form and to attention to popular publishing. Her judgement of the archival work is the most direct of the five: “Her wide-ranging book on the Hindi public sphere is remarkable because of its sheer engagement with primary sources – periodicals being chief among them, many of them now buried in forgotten archives.”

Tellings, texts and performance (Priyanka Basu)

Basu frames Orsini’s interest as the relationship between literature and performance, which she describes as “a continued dialogic relationship between literature and performance.” Her section focuses on oral-literate genres and on “tellings and texts”, the idea that a story exists across retellings, not only in a fixed written version. She also discusses multilingual North India and the circulation of Bhojpuri songs between India and Mauritius.

Genres as circulating forms (Raahi Adhya)

Adhya reads Orsini’s method as a way of treating genres as moving forms rather than fixed categories. Stories travel among performance, music and print, and they change as they do so. Her account stresses overlapping linguistic and literary worlds. She puts the point this way: “Her work opens up a way of thinking about literature that refuses boundaries and instead treats genres as living, circulating forms – structures that operate at once on narrative, discursive, and socio-political levels, always connecting the local to the larger world.”

World literature and the MULOSIGE project (Chinmay Sharma)

Sharma’s section covers East of Delhi and the MULOSIGE project. He summarises the book’s account of world literature as “a tapestry of crisscrossing significant geographies…that never becomes a single totality.” According to the essay, the project covered colonial consolidation, decolonisation and the current globalising moment. The essay does not state grant amounts or a grant year, so none are given here.

Print culture as social life (Kanupriya Dhingra)

Dhingra’s section treats print culture as a social world rather than a store of texts. She writes about the circulation of ideas about love across languages and media, and about the relationship between popular and literary print. Her summary is: “Her scholarship reveals that print cultures are not static repositories of words; they are living, dynamic worlds where meanings, emotions, and economies constantly intersect.” Dhingra also gives a personal account of Orsini as a mentor, which is the part of the essay least open to independent checking.

The books the essay discusses

The essay names three monographs and an edited volume. The table gives the dates the essay states and the subject it attaches to each.

Work Date stated in the essay Subject as described in the essay
The Hindi Public Sphere: 1920–1940: Language and Literature in the Age of Nationalism 2002; Hindi translation 2010 Periodicals, print and the public sphere in Hindi literary culture
Print and Pleasure: Popular Literature and Entertaining Fictions in Colonial North India 2009 Popular publishing, lithography and reading pleasure in colonial North India
East of Delhi: Multilingual Literary Culture and World Literature 2023 Multilingual literary circulation and an account of world literature
Love in South Asia: A Cultural History (edited volume) Not stated in the essay Ideas of love across South Asian literary and print cultures

The essay does not give a publication year for the edited volume, so none is supplied here.

How to use these threads

If you are approaching Orsini for the first time, the four contributors’ emphases suggest a practical order. Start with The Hindi Public Sphere for the archive of periodicals and the public sphere, then Print and Pleasure for the popular side of the same print world. East of Delhi is the book to read for the multilingual and world-literary frame, since Sharma and Adhya both place it at the centre of their accounts. Basu’s emphasis on performance is less tied to a single title in the essay, so it is best read as a thread running through the other work.

What the essay leaves open

  • It does not assess the books against competing scholarship, so it cannot tell you where Orsini’s arguments sit in current debate.
  • Its quotations are praise from former students and should be read as such, not as neutral findings.
  • Its claims about the MULOSIGE project’s scope are given as the essay states them; no funding or outcome details are supplied.
  • Its account of mentorship is personal and cannot be verified from the essay alone.

For a fuller picture, the books themselves are the primary sources: each of the three monographs can be checked directly against the claims made about it.
