The dating rumors started with a July 2025 dinner in Montreal, which on its own showed nothing about a romance. The picture changed as Katy Perry and former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau were documented together in public in Paris, New York and, through her posts, Japan. That record supports describing a publicly visible relationship. It does not establish when the relationship began or what is happening in private.
What started the rumors: a Montreal dinner in July 2025
The first contemporaneous report came from the Associated Press on July 29, 2025. AP said Perry and Trudeau dined at Le Violon in Montreal for about two hours. A communications consultant for the restaurant, Samantha Jin, told AP there were no visible signs of public affection during the meal: “No visual signs of PDA or anything.” That remark describes the dinner only. It is not a statement about the pair’s relationship, and the report did not confirm a romance.

The public record, milestone by milestone
Later events carried more weight than the original sighting because they were dated, public and, in one case, posted by Perry herself. The table lists each documented milestone and what it shows.
| Date | Event | Reported by | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Late July 2025 | Dinner at Le Violon in Montreal, lasting about two hours | Associated Press, July 29, 2025 | A shared meal, confirmed by a restaurant representative; no visible affection observed |
| October 2025 | Photographed holding hands on a Paris birthday date night | Los Angeles Times, October 27, 2025 | Public hand-holding; neither had publicly addressed the relationship at publication |
| December 2025 | Perry posted a carousel of images showing the pair in Japan; Trudeau shared a photograph with Perry after meeting former Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida and his wife | ELLE timeline, September 2, 2026 | Both shared photographs from the same trip; Perry’s posts are her own public material |
| June 2026 | Posed together at the Tribeca Festival premiere of Katy Perry: The Lifetimes Tour – Live from Paris, with a red carpet appearance also recorded | EL PAÍS, June 9, 2026; ELLE timeline, September 2, 2026 | A joint public appearance at a film premiere |
The most recent broad timeline found at the time of writing is ELLE’s September 2, 2026 piece, which covers events through August 2026. Developments after that are not reflected here.

#1 Best Overall
- Teenage Dream is the 2010 sophomore album from the American Pop princess Katy Perry
What the record supports, and what it does not
- Supported: the two dined together in July 2025, were photographed together in Paris in October 2025, and appeared together at the June 2026 Tribeca premiere. Perry also posted images of the pair from Japan in December 2025.
- Supported: the documented appearances fit a description of a publicly visible relationship.
- Not established: the date the relationship began. The first public sighting is from July 2025, but a sighting does not date the start of a relationship.
- Not established: private details, motives, or the terms of the relationship.
- Not established: a quoted statement from either of them describing the relationship. None of the milestones above includes one.
How to judge new reports about the pair
- Separate what was observed from what was inferred. A dated sighting, photograph or premiere appearance is an event; a claim about how long the couple has been together is an interpretation.
- Prefer a post by either party or a named observer over an unnamed source. Describe anonymous-source accounts as claims made by sources, not as established fact.
- Do not use a first sighting to date the relationship. The July 2025 dinner was reported as a dinner, and that is how it should be cited.
- Check the date of any timeline before relying on it. Compilations go out of date quickly, and the most recent one found here ends in August 2026.
Until either Perry or Trudeau speaks on the record about the relationship, the defensible position is the one the dated record allows: they have been seen together in public repeatedly since July 2025, and the start date and private details remain unknown.
