“Halls of Stone,” The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, Episode 5, originally premiered on September 12, 2024, and is available on Prime Video. Before watching, the key context is that Sauron has taken the identity of Annatar, the Elven Rings have already been forged, and the episode’s story turns to the dangers of the Dwarven Rings and political uncertainty in Númenor.
Where Episode 5 fits in Season 2
Amazon’s season guide says Season 2 has eight episodes and premiered August 29, 2024. The series is set in Tolkien’s Second Age, thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. “Halls of Stone” is the season’s fifth episode; Apple TV lists its runtime as 1 hour and 1 minute and its original release date as September 12, 2024. It is listed as available on Prime Video, though access may vary by region.
Amazon describes the series as watchable without having read the books or seen the films. Familiarity with Tolkien’s world can help with references, but the episode’s immediate setup is straightforward.
What happened before “Halls of Stone”
Sauron is now posing as Annatar
Season 1 revealed that Halbrand was Sauron. In Season 2, he presents himself to the Elven smith Celebrimbor as Annatar, a divine emissary, and manipulates him into making more Rings. That makes Celebrimbor’s judgment central to the episode’s stakes.

The Three Elven Rings have been forged
At the end of Season 1, the Elven leaders used mithril to forge three Rings. Season 2 moves beyond that first forging: Sauron’s influence is now tied to the creation of additional Rings, including those intended for the Dwarves.
What the episode is about
Apple TV’s synopsis connects three storylines: Durin grows suspicious of the Dwarven Rings, Celebrimbor must reconsider his priorities, and Elendil searches for hope amid political upheaval in Númenor. The episode therefore follows the consequences of the Rings across different communities rather than treating their creation as only a matter for the Elves.

What the Dwarven Rings do—and what remains unclear
The show presents the Rings as sources of power that can also endanger their bearers. In its portrayal, King Durin III becomes greedier and more obstinate while wearing his Ring. That is an adaptation choice, not a settled rule for every Ring or every bearer.
Tolkien’s books leave many details about Ring powers unclear. TIME’s September 12, 2024 explainer notes a contrast: the books describe Dwarves as resistant to Sauron’s influence, while the series makes the Ring’s effects on Durin more visible. The adaptation and the books should be kept distinct; neither that contrast nor the episode synopsis establishes a complete, universal set of mechanics for the Rings.
