Those details explain why speculation spread, but they do not establish what happened privately. A reported absence and social-media activity are not proof of a particular dispute, its cause, or either actor’s responsibility.
What did the cast say in 2019?
In a September 2019 interview with Us Weekly, fellow cast member Eric McCormack rejected the speculation. He called it “crazy” and said, “I think people worried about that entirely too much.” He also said of the four principal cast members, “The four of us get along like a house on fire, we always have.” The comments are reported by Us Weekly.

McCormack’s response is a public denial of the rumors, not a detailed account of the private circumstances behind Mullally’s leave or the actors’ relationship.
What did the show’s co-creator acknowledge in 2020?
In April 2020, co-creator Max Mutchnick told TVLine, “It was not an easy year,” and referred to “any temporary squabble that would take place on the stage.” He said the creators wanted to keep the press out of “whatever happened on the set this year” because discussion would distract from the stories they wanted to tell.

Mutchnick’s remarks acknowledge that the year involved difficulty and a temporary squabble, but he did not name its participants, describe a specific incident, or connect it definitively to the rumors about Mullally and Messing. His comments therefore do not settle what happened between the two actors.

The available statements do not substantiate that claim. In 2019, McCormack said the team wanted to conclude the show properly and go out on top. That is the reason he gave for the ending; the public record cited here does not establish Mullally’s absence or the series finale as consequences of a feud.
