Hailey Upton’s departure leaves Voight without his closest confidant in the Intelligence Unit—and without one of the few people willing to confront him when he goes too far. In Season 12, showrunner Gwen Sigan said, that absence compounds his response to nearly dying: he initially keeps moving, but the loss pushes him toward a more inward reckoning. It also leaves the unit to rebuild its balance.
Why Upton’s absence hits Voight so hard
Upton was more than a trusted colleague to Voight. “In a lot of ways, Upton became that confidant for him,” Sigan told TVLine on Sept. 24, 2024. She also described Upton as someone who would challenge him when he was going off the rails. Without that corrective voice, Voight loses a person who could both understand him and push back.

Sigan characterized their connection as having “that underlying parental sort of thing,” adding that Upton had not had that kind of support in her life. In the Season 11 finale, Voight gives her his blessing to pursue a different future—an act of support that helps make her departure hopeful rather than a rupture between them. Upton survives the events surrounding Voight’s kidnapping, tells him she wants more for herself, and leaves Chicago.
How her departure shapes Voight’s Season 12 arc
Season 12 begins with two disruptions for Voight: the near-death experience from the previous finale and Upton’s absence. Sigan connected the two. Nearly dying makes Voight confront how abruptly his life could end; losing Upton removes a person who might have helped him process that realization.

His first response is not to stop and reflect. Describing the premiere’s version of Voight’s inner impulse, Sigan told TV Insider on Sept. 25, 2024: “I gotta move, I gotta move, I gotta move.” That restless coping is characteristic of him, but Sigan said the emotional reckoning continues through the season. Upton’s absence is therefore part of a longer change in how Voight faces his own vulnerability, not a problem that disappears once he returns to work.
What changes for the Intelligence Unit
Upton’s exit also affects the team around Voight. Sigan described a “bit of a vacuum” in the unit because Upton used to call him out and confront him. The remaining members have to find a new balance, build different relationships, and step up in ways that may have fallen to Upton before.

That organizational shift is distinct from Voight’s personal grief and introspection: the unit must adjust its working dynamics even as he deals with the loss of a trusted confidant. The interviews describe the intended direction of the season, rather than guaranteeing that every planned beat plays out identically in every episode.

The series does not establish a definitive destination for Upton in the cited coverage. In the finale, she considers career possibilities, but her next employer and specific path are left open. Her departure is not a death, and Season 12’s effect on Voight does not depend on the show naming where she went: what matters to his arc is that she is no longer beside him in the unit.
