Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie did not own Château Miraval directly in their own names. They held interests in the French wine estate through companies. In 2021, Jolie sold her California holding company, which owned half of the Luxembourg company above the winery, to wine company Tenute del Mondo. Pitt sued, alleging the sale broke an agreement requiring his consent. Those allegations remain disputed, and a 2026 appeals-court ruling addressed whether California could hear the case against one investor—not who was right about the sale.
How the winery was held
The corporate chain matters because the shorthand “Jolie sold the winery” leaves out what changed hands. Château Miraval S.A. is the French company at the estate level. It was owned by Quimicum S.a r.l., a Luxembourg company, whose interests were held through the former couple’s California companies.
| Company or interest | Role described in the California Court of Appeal opinion |
|---|---|
| Château Miraval S.A. | The French company operating beneath Quimicum. |
| Quimicum S.a r.l. | The Luxembourg company that owned Château Miraval S.A. |
| Nouvel | Jolie’s California company; it held a 50% interest in Quimicum before its 2021 sale. |
| Mondo Bongo | Pitt’s California company; it held the other 50% interest in Quimicum. |
Pitt and Jolie acquired Quimicum in 2008 through their respective companies. The appellate opinion says Nouvel initially held 40% and Mondo Bongo 60%. Before the couple married in 2014, Mondo Bongo transferred shares so that each company held 50%.
What changed in the 2021 sale
Jolie sold Nouvel to Tenute del Mondo, a Dutch wine company and wholly owned subsidiary of Cyprus-incorporated SPI Group Holding Limited. That meant Tenute acquired Nouvel and its indirect 50% interest in Quimicum; it was not a direct sale of Château Miraval S.A. by Jolie.

The 2021 sale agreement described in the appellate opinion set a price of $64 million, payable in four installments. The opinion says a bank guarantee covered the later $39 million in payments. Those are terms of that transaction, not a current valuation of the estate or a damages award.
What Pitt and Jolie’s companies alleged
Pitt and Mondo Bongo sued Jolie, Nouvel, Yuri Shefler and related parties in 2022. The opposing accounts below come from court pleadings; they are allegations, not findings that the court has established as fact.
Rank #2
- Cabernet Sauvignon , France
- A smooth medium-body and balanced mouthfeel bursts with juicy cassis and blackberry finishing with hints of mocha.
- Food Pairing: Homemade grilled pizza, grilled steak and roasted vegetables
- Hailing from 2 regions in France – first, the Languedoc region in the south of France, where the fruit provides the body and full, fruity characteristics of the wine. Second, where the cooler climate provides juicy, aromatic, acidic fruit flavors.
- ABV: 12%
| Party | Position alleged in its pleading |
|---|---|
| Pitt and Mondo Bongo | They alleged an implied agreement barred either side from selling its interest without the other’s consent, and that Jolie’s sale interfered with Pitt’s rights. |
| Nouvel | In its cross-complaint, it alleged Pitt excluded Jolie and Nouvel from participation and improperly controlled the company. |
Nouvel’s cross-complaint also describes a Provence wine venture formed with Familles Perrin in 2013 to make, market and distribute wine. That is the pleading’s description of the arrangement, not an independent update on the business’s current operations.
What the 2026 appeals-court ruling did—and did not—decide
On June 24, 2026, the California Court of Appeal reversed an order that had quashed service on Shefler for lack of personal jurisdiction. The court concluded that California could exercise specific personal jurisdiction over him, citing evidence of his role in structuring and finalizing the purchase of a California company and the purchase agreement’s California-law and forum provisions.

- One 750ml bottle of Meiomi Pinot Noir Red Wine, containing five 5 fl. oz. glasses of wine
- Pinot Noir wine with dark berry, juicy strawberry, and toasty mocha flavors
- Share this bottled wine with friends and pair with thin crust pizza
- California red wine made with grapes from esteemed coastal winegrowing regions
- Aged in French oak barrels for depth and complexity
The court wrote: “On these facts, Shefler purposefully availed himself of the benefits of a California forum, and the controversy arose out of his contacts with the forum.” That is a ruling about jurisdiction: it allowed the case against Shefler to proceed in California. It did not decide whether Jolie breached an agreement, whether the sale was unlawful, who should prevail on the parties’ claims, or who owns the winery now.
Did their divorce settlement resolve the winery fight?
No. The Associated Press reported in December 2024 that Pitt and Jolie had reached a divorce settlement, while distinguishing the separate winery lawsuit from that settlement. The divorce agreement therefore did not, by itself, resolve the Miraval litigation.

Where the dispute stands
As of October 8, 2026, the available information does not establish a complete trial-court status or a final decision on the merits. The established procedural development is the appellate reversal concerning jurisdiction over Shefler. The underlying contract and control claims remain contested, and no verified final outcome is established here.
