What did Jessica Walter say happened?
In the May 23, 2018 New York Times cast interview, Walter recalled being yelled at by Tambor on the set of Arrested Development. She said, “In like almost 60 years of working, I’ve never had anybody yell at me like that on a set.” She described the conduct as verbal harassment, while also saying Tambor had apologized: “Verbally, yes, he harassed me, but he did apologize. I have to let it go.”

Walter’s remarks were her public account of the incident. Tambor had previously referred to a “blowup” with Walter and said he had “profusely apologized,” as summarized by TIME. The available reporting does not provide a complete, independently corroborated account from both actors or establish the exact words used during the original confrontation.
Was Walter accusing Tambor of sexual harassment?
No. Walter distinguished what she said happened to her on Arrested Development from sexual conduct. In the same interview, she said Tambor had not crossed a sexual line with her on that show, while describing his behavior toward her as verbal harassment.

The sexual-harassment allegations discussed in connection with Tambor concerned his work on Transparent, a separate production. Tambor denied those allegations, according to TIME and Vanity Fair. They should not be conflated with Walter’s account of the on-set verbal outburst.
Why did Jason Bateman apologize?
During the cast interview, Bateman and other male cast members tried to put the incident in the context of difficult behavior they said could be common in entertainment. Walter became emotional as she spoke. Alia Shawkat pushed back on the suggestion that common behavior was therefore acceptable, saying, “But that doesn’t mean it’s acceptable.”

After the interview drew criticism, Bateman apologized publicly for not centering Walter’s experience. Vanity Fair reported his apology, which included the statement: “There’s never any excuse for abuse, in any form, from any gender.” The outlet also reported that Tony Hale apologized directly to Walter. Bateman’s apology addressed how he responded in the interview; it was not a new account of the original incident.
What additional details did Walter share later?
In a 2019 interview with ELLE, Walter said the confrontation began amid last-minute line changes and a reset take. She said she apologized several times while Tambor ranted, and that he ran off set. This is Walter’s later account; the reporting does not independently establish every detail.

Walter also said the public discussion would not have happened if Tambor had not raised the incident in a Hollywood Reporter interview. Reflecting on how she might respond to such behavior in the future, she said, “If somebody was nasty or rotten or loud, it never would have occurred to me to bring up the incident. Now I would.”

Walter said in 2018 that Tambor apologized and that she was trying to let go of her anger. Her 2019 remarks likewise indicated that she was ready to move on. Those public statements do not establish the private state of their relationship or prove a complete reconciliation.

The clearest supported account is therefore limited: Walter described a serious verbal outburst on the Arrested Development set, Tambor acknowledged a blowup and apologized, and Walter later said she wanted to move forward.
