John Mulaney and Anna Marie Tendler announced their divorce on May 10, 2021, after nearly seven years of marriage. Tendler’s representative said Mulaney had decided to end the marriage; his spokesperson declined further comment as he focused on recovery and work. Their public statements did not give a definitive explanation for the private reasons behind the split.
What the former spouses said publicly
The clearest account comes from statements their representatives gave when the divorce became public. Tendler’s representative told the Los Angeles Times on May 10, 2021: “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
Mulaney’s spokesperson said: “John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work.” These were statements from representatives, not direct interviews with either former spouse. Neither provided a full account of why the marriage ended.
How the split unfolded
- July 2014: Mulaney and Tendler married. The Los Angeles Times reported that Mulaney had described the wedding on Instagram as “a beautiful and perfect day.”
- December 2020: The Los Angeles Times reported that Mulaney entered a Pennsylvania facility for treatment related to alcohol and cocaine addiction. The paper said he had been in outpatient care since February 2021.
- About three months before the announcement: Vanity Fair reported, citing Page Six, that Mulaney had asked for a divorce around this time. This is attributed reporting, not a direct statement from either former spouse.
- May 10, 2021: The couple’s divorce was announced publicly, with the representatives’ statements above.
- July 2021: Reports said Mulaney filed for divorce in New York. Entertainment Tonight said it relied on court records it obtained; Vanity Fair attributed its filing report to People. Entertainment Tonight and Vanity Fair published those reports.
Did Mulaney’s recovery cause the divorce?
The announcement came amid Mulaney’s recovery and return to work, and Tendler’s representative explicitly wished him success in recovery. That timing is relevant context, but it does not establish that addiction treatment caused the breakup. The public statements did not describe a causal link, and the reporting cited here does not establish a single decisive incident.

Vanity Fair’s account of the earlier divorce request is also a reported timeline attributed to Page Six, not proof of why either person made their decisions. Claims that turn chronology or online speculation into a confirmed explanation go beyond what these sources establish.
What Tendler later shared about the marriage
A 2024 review of Tendler’s memoir, Men Have Called Her Crazy, offers limited retrospective context. The Atlantic says Tendler wrote that the marriage was falling apart during the pandemic and describes her psychiatric hospitalization in early 2021. The review also notes that Mulaney is largely absent from the memoir. It therefore provides context about Tendler’s experience, not a complete explanation of the divorce: The Atlantic’s review.

What is known—and what remains private
The public record in these reports supports a limited conclusion: Mulaney and Tendler confirmed the divorce; Tendler’s representative said Mulaney had decided to end the marriage; and Mulaney’s spokesperson declined further comment at the time. The reported timeline and Tendler’s later reflections add context, but the sources do not establish a definitive private cause or substantiate an alleged affair.
Some coverage spells her name “Annamarie,” while other sources use “Anna Marie.” Both refer to the same person, Anna Marie Tendler.
