PSA’s published standard calls for four perfectly sharp corners, sharp focus, full original gloss, no staining, and centering within approximately 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. A card that looks flawless straight out of a pack can still miss the grade, because manufacturing defects, edge and corner wear, centering, and grader judgment all count.
What PSA’s Gem Mint 10 standard asks for
PSA’s grading standards define the top grade in direct terms: “A PSA Gem Mint 10 card is a virtually perfect card.” That wording matters. Gem Mint 10 is an assessment of the whole card, not a centering check with a few other boxes ticked. A card with excellent centering can still lose the grade to a soft corner, a surface mark, or a print defect.
PSA also allows a slight printing imperfection, provided it does not impair the card’s overall appeal. That allowance is narrow. It does not cover visible staining, lost gloss, or defects that a grader would count against the card’s appearance.
How to check a card before you submit it
Work through the card in the same order a grader is likely to look at it. Use strong, even light and a magnifier, and check the front and back separately.

- Recently we have received some complaints about some bad reviews because we only sent magnifying glasses. In order to protect the environment, we try to reduce excess packaging materials, we found that the box of the magnifying glass can hold all the items in the set, so the box of the magnifying glass became a simple box
- Some buyers received the goods without opening the box, thinking they received the magnifying glass, but did not know that the box was full of all the things, began to exchange, refund, bad reviews, complaints. This led to most of our inventory being banned by Amazon and losing a lot of goods.
- It is we did not write clearly the box contains all the goods led to some friends misunderstanding, if you receive the goods, please open the box to check. If you have bad reviews or complaints, we sincerely hope that you can modify the instructions according to the actual situation, thank you very much.

Centering
Compare the image borders on each side of the card. Measure the left-to-right and top-to-bottom ratios on the front and on the reverse. PSA’s published tolerances are approximate, and a card within them is not guaranteed a 10. Centering is the easiest factor to measure and the easiest to overvalue, so treat a borderline result as a warning sign rather than a pass.
Corners
Look at all four corners. A Gem Mint 10 needs four perfectly sharp corners. Watch for whitening, rounding, dings, and bends, and check each corner from more than one angle, since a corner can look clean head-on and still show a soft tip at a shallow angle.
Edges
Run your eye along all four edges for chips, whitening, roughness, or wear. PSA advises collectors to inspect edges closely, and corner and edge condition are among the main factors it lists as affecting the grade.

- Centering Precision: This card grading tool helps determine if sports cards or TCG cards meet PSA or BGS centering requirements, potentially saving on grading fees.
- Protective Packaging: The tool includes a protective covering on both sides to prevent scratches during shipping, which should be removed before use.
- Durable Construction: Crafted from high-quality, crystal-clear acrylic, the tool resists warping, smearing, bending, and creasing for lasting use.
- Effortless Operation: Users can easily check card centering from left to right and top to bottom by placing the guide over the card, taking measurements, and referencing the included percentages guide.
- Bonus Cleaning: A complimentary cleaning cloth is included, allowing users to clean cards before using the tool and placing them in sleeves for grading.
Surface and gloss
Tilt the card under light and look for scratches, dents, creases, stains, and any loss of the original gloss. PSA requires full original gloss and no staining. Fine surface marks that only appear at certain angles can still matter.

Print quality
Check the printed image and text for print lines, specks, and other manufacturing imperfections. A slight imperfection may be tolerated if it does not diminish the card’s appeal, but a visible print defect in a prominent area is more likely to cost the grade.
PSA says that grading combines objective checks, such as measuring centering and locating print defects, with a more subjective judgment about eye appeal. That judgment matters most near the centering boundaries. Its own published wording is that “a large part of grading is objective” while “the other component of grading is somewhat subjective.” A card that measures inside the tolerance can still fall short on appearance, and a grader’s call on a borderline card is not something you can predict from a ruler alone.

Centering limits at a glance
| Card side | PSA published approximate centering limit for Gem Mint 10 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Front | About 55/45 | Measured as a border ratio. Approximate tolerance, not a guarantee. |
| Reverse | About 75/25 | Reverse centering is allowed a wider split than the front. |
These figures are from PSA’s grading standards as checked in 2026. Confirm the current page before you rely on them, because published tolerances can be revised.
Why a fresh pull is not automatically a 10
Many collectors assume that a card straight from a sealed pack, handled carefully from the start, will grade 10. PSA’s guidance on fresh pulls says otherwise. Its conclusion on the subject reads: “The manufacturing of a card plays an equally large role in the grading process as the condition of its corners and edges, poor centering, and any surface issues and manufacturing print defects can all dramatically affect the grade as well.”

In practice, a freshly opened card can already have off-center printing, a soft corner from the pack, or a print defect, and none of that is fixed by how quickly it was protected. Immediate protection helps keep a card from picking up new damage, but it does not change the card’s condition or raise its grade.

- The sports cards grading kit includes two sets of card centering grading tools (a total of four cards), Clarity Tool with LED, a portable 30x Clarity Tool, a black Clarity Tool line, a pair of white cotton gloves, a pair of black latex gloves, and two ultra-fine microfiber cloths (one black and one white).
- The 2021 pure black version of the card centering grading tool can cause confusion with its line markings during comparison. The upgraded version adds red and black intersecting lines for clearer and easier comparison. Each kit contains both the old and new versions. Instructions for the card centering grading tool are provided on the back of each card, along with a centering guide inside the package.
- In 2024, the grid on the card centering grading tool was remeasured, improving its precision from 0.07 millimeters to 0.02 millimeters. This is more than a threefold increase in accuracy compared to the 2021 version.

The white cotton gloves are used for removing fingerprints from polished cards, while the microfiber cloths are for wiping off dust from the cards.
A penny sleeve is a practical way to protect a card during handling and storage. It does not repair defects, and PSA does not endorse any specific sleeve product.

PSA’s Getting Started guidance reports two broad distribution figures. For modern Trading Card Game cards graded since 2018, 90% received a PSA 8 or higher. For vintage Trading Card Game cards graded since 2018, 80% received a PSA 7 or higher. These are context for how submitted cards tend to grade overall. They are not Gem Mint 10 rates, and they do not tell you the odds that any particular Pokémon card will grade 10.
No separate Pokémon-only threshold or Pokémon-specific grading survey is established in the material available for this article. PSA explicitly covers Pokémon cards within its general trading-card guidance, which is why its standard is used here.

What this article does and does not cover
Everything above describes PSA’s standards. Other grading companies publish their own tolerances and wording, and they may treat corners, edges, surface, and print defects differently. This article does not compare those companies, so if you are choosing a grader, check that company’s current published standard directly.
The same caution applies to the figures. Centering limits are approximate, and the grade on any individual card depends on how a grader weighs the whole card. Use the checklist to sort out which cards are worth submitting and which are likely to disappoint, not as a guarantee of a 10.
