What Jennifer Did is a 2024 feature-length true-crime documentary on Netflix about the November 8, 2010 attack on Jennifer Pan’s parents in Markham, Ontario. Netflix lists it as TV-14, gives its premiere as April 10, 2024, and builds it from police interrogation footage and new interviews with detectives and friends of the family. The headline’s claim that it is Netflix’s “new #1 movie” is a separate question, and the official pages do not settle it.
What the film is about
Netflix’s Tudum coverage recounts that on the night of November 8, 2010, Jennifer Pan called emergency services and described intruders shooting her parents. Her mother, Bich Ha, died. Her father, Huei Hann, survived. Investigators later found that Pan knew more about the attack than her initial account suggested, and that gap between the 911 call and the investigation is the thread the film follows.
How the documentary is built
According to Netflix, the film draws on police interrogation footage and on interviews with people connected to the case. Three kinds of material carry most of the story.
- Police interrogation footage. This is the film’s most distinctive material. It shows investigators questioning Pan, so viewers can watch the case unfold through the same conversations the detectives had.
- Detective Bill Courtice. Tudum identifies him as the lead case investigator. It quotes him saying: “Trying to get someone to talk about a traumatic event is very difficult.” Read this as his account of this investigation, not as a general clinical finding.
- Nam Nguyen. Tudum identifies him as a high school friend who appears in the documentary. The article describes Pan’s claims about school, college and the expectations she felt at home. These are recollections attributed to the people speaking, not established court findings.
Keep two things separate while watching. Attributed recollections are what people said. Documentary editing decides how those statements are sequenced and framed, so it shapes the story but is not independent proof of what happened.

Is it Netflix’s No. 1 movie?
The official Netflix pages establish that the film exists and give its format, rating and release details. None of them gives a chart rank. A ranking claim is only meaningful with three pieces attached: the date, the territory, and a contemporaneous chart source. Without those, “#1” describes one moment in one market, not a standing fact about the film.
If you want to check the rank yourself, look at Netflix’s weekly Top 10 for your country for the week you are reading, rather than relying on a headline written at launch.

- Last summer, four friends made a desperate pact to conceal a shocking secret. But now, someone has apparently learned the truth.
Where the case stands
The most detailed legal reporting available is TIME’s April 10, 2024 account. It reported that Pan and her co-defendants had been sentenced in 2015, that an appeal had been granted in 2023, and that the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision on the retrial question was pending at publication. That is a 2024 snapshot. It should not be presented as the current position in 2026.

- Jennifer Love Hewitt, Brandy, Freddie Prinze, Jr., and Mekhi Phifer star in the screamer sequel to the blood-chilling box office hit, "I Know What You Did Last Summer," as the slicker-clad killer with a hook in his hand returns for another season of bloody revenge.
- Look for the Supreme Court of Canada’s published decisions and case listings for any ruling on the retrial question.
- Search for dated news reports published after April 2024, and note each report’s publication date before relying on it.
- If a retrial has been scheduled or completed, check that the reporting names the court and the date of the proceeding.
Reading further on the case
The main further reading is Jeremy Grimaldi’s 2016 book, A Daughter’s Deadly Deception: The Jennifer Pan Story. TIME reports that the documentary draws on research and police footage Grimaldi used for the book. The two work in different forms: the book is extended written reporting, while the film is an edited narrative built around interrogation footage and interviews. The film itself is available on Netflix where it is licensed. Availability depends on your country and subscription, so check the title page in your own Netflix region.
