The deep-sea fish that Marlin and Dory encounter in Finding Nemo is an anglerfish. Its glowing lure points most closely to the black seadevil, a real deep-sea anglerfish known in scientific literature as Melanocetus johnsoni or Melanocetus johnsonii, depending on the source. Pixar and Disney’s official film pages describe the creature but never name its species, so the black seadevil link is a well-supported resemblance rather than confirmed film canon.
What the film itself tells us
Finding Nemo was released by Disney on May 30, 2003. Pixar’s description of the film frames the drop-off sequence as the point where Marlin and Dory leave the safety of the reef and enter the deep ocean. Producer Graham Walters is quoted in that description on the ocean’s appeal and danger: “The ocean is so beautiful and there’s so much to explore, but if you’re a fish, every foot you go there is something that could eat you.”
The official material calls the deep-sea creature a scary deep-sea creature. It does not give the animated fish a scientific name, a species, or a size. That gap is why the answer has to be stated as an anglerfish identification with a black seadevil resemblance, not as a species label stated by the filmmakers.
Why “anglerfish” is the solid answer
Anglerfish are defined by a built-in fishing lure, and that is the feature the film sequence shows. NOAA Ocean Exploration explains the mechanism for the deep-sea anglerfishes it describes, and the same logic applies to the creature in the film.

The lure: an esca on an ilicium
According to NOAA Ocean Exploration, adult females of most deep-sea anglerfish species have an esca at the end of an ilicium. The ilicium is a modified dorsal-fin ray, which is the “fishing rod,” and the esca is the lure at its tip. NOAA says the escae of these fish contain a species of bioluminescent bacteria. This description is specific to the group NOAA is discussing. It should not be stretched into a claim that every anglerfish lure works in exactly the same way.
What the light is for
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) biologist Johanna Weston, a deep-sea biologist and postdoctoral investigator, puts it this way: “Anglerfish have a bioluminescent lure, which is an incredibly creative way to attract prey in the darkness.” WHOI’s Ciara Willis, a biological oceanographer and postdoctoral investigator, adds the broader context: “Species in the deep sea use just one percent of available light and employ it in incredible ways—to communicate, evade predators, and hunt.” In other words, the glow is less a special effect than a practical answer to a world with almost no sunlight.

Why the black seadevil is the closest match
Among the anglerfish species that aquariums and institutions describe, the black seadevil is the one whose profile best fits the film creature’s look and role. The table below compares what the three named sources say. Publication dates were not displayed on the Monterey Bay Aquarium and WHOI pages, so treat the figures as current institutional descriptions rather than dated measurements.
| Source | Name used | Depth | Size | Notable description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monterey Bay Aquarium (black seadevil profile; publication date not displayed) | Melanocetus johnsoni | 100–4,500 m | Maximum of 20 cm | The female attracts prey with a light-tipped fishing pole on her head. |
| Smithsonian Ocean | Melanocetus johnsonii | Not stated | Not stated | Describes a glowing lure, and says the male attaches to the female. |
| Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (publication date not displayed) | Melanocetus johnsonii | 200–1,500 m, described as typical | Females about six inches; males under an inch | Describes the bioluminescent lure as a way to attract prey in darkness. |
The spelling difference between johnsoni and johnsonii is a matter of source convention, not a disagreement about the animal. When you cite a particular page, keep the spelling it uses.

The size figures matter for anyone picturing the film creature at full scale. The aquarium’s maximum of 20 cm and WHOI’s typical female length of about six inches describe a fish that is far smaller than most people expect from its cinematic presence. The males are tiny by comparison, under an inch according to WHOI, and Smithsonian Ocean’s note that the male attaches to the female reflects how unusual the species’ reproduction is.

Deep-sea anglerfishes: 167 species in 11 families
NOAA Ocean Exploration, on a page published June 4, 2012, gives 167 species in 11 families for the deep-sea anglerfishes, the primarily bathypelagic group the page describes. This is the figure that applies to the deep-water fishes most relevant to the film creature.
Anglerfish overall: more than 200 species
NOAA Ocean Today says there are more than 200 anglerfish species overall. That page’s publication date was not displayed, and its count covers a broader group than the 167-species figure. Quote the two numbers with their scopes attached, or readers will assume they disagree.

The 1,600-foot depth is a different fish
NOAA Ocean Today reports an anglerfish found at 1,600 feet. That depth belongs to the specimen NOAA describes. It is not a claim that the film fish was found there, and it is not a typical depth for the black seadevil, which WHOI places between 200 and 1,500 m.
A rare surface sighting is not normal behavior
WHOI discusses a rare fish sighted near the surface off Tenerife and notes that explanations for its appearance there were speculative. That event is an unusual observation and should be read apart from the habitat descriptions above. The sources do not present it as typical behavior, and the film’s drop-off is set in the deep ocean, not at the surface.
