Instead of picking a single class at each level, the player picks two and receives class features from both. The best-known version is a variant rule for Dungeons & Dragons 3.5e, and it is optional: whether it appears in a given game depends on the edition, the book, and the game master. The word “gestalt” also has unrelated meanings in literary criticism and acting, so the surrounding context determines which sense applies.
How the tabletop rule works
The gestalt rule is documented in the Gestalt Characters entry of the d20 System Reference Document, which describes the 3.5e variant that appears alongside the Unearthed Arcana sourcebook. Its core mechanics are straightforward:
- Two classes per level. At each new character level, the player chooses which two classes to advance. The character can take one class at one level and a different pair at the next.
- Best of both. Where the two classes overlap, the character takes the better aspect of each rather than stacking them in every case.
- Shared features accrue at the faster rate. Features that both classes provide advance at whichever progression is quicker.
- Spellcasting is tracked separately. If both classes cast spells, each spellcasting progression is kept on its own track rather than merged.
- No double prestige classes. A character cannot take two prestige classes at the same level.
A worked example: rogue and cleric
The source’s illustration pairs a rogue with a cleric from first level. The character gains rogue abilities such as sneak attack and trapfinding, and also cleric spellcasting and the ability to turn or rebuke undead. Because the character holds both sets of abilities from the start, it can act in roles that a single-class build would need a party member to cover, which is the main appeal of the rule.
Hit dice, attack bonus, and saves
The rule also addresses hit dice, base attack bonus, and saving throws. These are mechanics specific to 3.5e. Other editions and other games handle these values differently, so the 3.5e treatment should not be assumed to carry over.

Why game masters treat it as optional
A gestalt character is more capable than a single-class character at the same level. That extra capability has two practical consequences that the game master has to weigh before allowing the variant:
- Power level. A character with features from two progressions can outperform a party built on single classes, which can shift encounter difficulty.
- Prerequisites and prestige classes. Prestige classes often have entry requirements tied to a specific class. Allowing gestalt builds can make those requirements easier to reach, changing how prestige classes function in a campaign.
For these reasons, the decision belongs to the game master. A table that adopts the rule should agree on which classes may be combined and how prestige-class entry is handled before character creation begins.

Changing the rule for your own table
Many groups adapt the rule rather than using it exactly as written. If you are designing a house version, the questions to settle are:
- Which classes are allowed to advance together, and whether any pairings are excluded.
- Which overlapping features take the better value and which stack.
- How each spellcasting progression works when both classes can cast.
- Whether prestige classes are restricted, and how their prerequisites are checked.
- How encounters and prerequisites are adjusted to match the higher power level.
The 3.5e rule answers these questions in one way. It does not establish a single official adaptation for other editions.

“Gestalt” in literature and acting
Outside games, “gestalt” describes a whole that is more than the sum of its parts. In narratology, the term can describe how a reader assembles a character’s traits into one intelligible picture. A handbook on narrative analysis uses the concept in that sense, and it has nothing to do with class advancement.
In acting, the term can refer to Gestalt therapeutic approaches used as performance-training methods for building a character. An acting study uses the term this way. Again, this is a separate use from the paired-class rule.

Which meaning applies to you
- If you are reading about a game: the answer is the two-class variant. If you are using D&D 3.5e, check the Unearthed Arcana sourcebook. If you are using another system, check that system’s rules before assuming gestalt exists.
- If you are reading literary criticism: “gestalt” refers to how readers organize a character’s traits into a coherent whole.
- If you are studying acting: the term may refer to Gestalt-based performance training, not to a game rule.
What is established and what is not
The core 3.5e mechanic is well documented in the rules reference and the sourcebook that carries it. Edition-specific details, availability of the sourcebook, and how other systems treat the idea are not established by these sources, so treat any claim about them as unverified until you check the relevant rulebook.
Bare-title searches on this phrase are often asked in tabletop forums, where it is used as a casual shorthand. Forum answers can be useful for understanding how players talk about the rule, but they are not a substitute for the rules text.
