In a 2024 interview with LGBTQ Nation, Harden described realizing “when I realized that we were not going to make a life together”. That is her broad retrospective account of the decision, not a detailed explanation of what happened in the marriage or what prompted the separation.

In the same interview, she described choosing to parent on her own. She also said, “My ex and I are friends now, and I respect my ex,” describing their later relationship rather than giving a reason for the divorce.
What was reported when the divorce filing became public?
Harden filed for divorce in February 2012, after about 15 years of marriage, according to contemporary reports by ABC News and CBS News. The couple had married in July 1996 after meeting while working on the film The Spitfire Grill.

Harden’s representative asked that the family’s privacy be respected “for the sake of the couple’s three children” and said, “No further comments will be made on this matter.” Those were the representative’s words, not a direct statement from Harden, and the announcement did not give a cause.

No. Harden’s later comments explain, in general terms, that she came to believe the couple would not build a life together, while the 2012 announcement declined further comment. Neither identifies a precipitating incident or a more specific underlying reason.
A 2017 Guardian interview recounts Harden’s experience of the divorce period and how reading Harry Potter with her children helped bring them together through a difficult time. It does not explain why the marriage ended.
